You never need an occasion to justify eating cake, especially not at Lynn's Cakes and Coffee, where the cakes are moist and flavourful. The cake-to-frosting ratio is just right, and if you're looking for great red velvet and/or carrot cake, look no further. This bakery serves one of the best in town. Albeit being located in Eng Kong Terrace (read: slightly inconvenient), it's worth traveling to, especially if you're looking for a quiet space to chill with your slice of cake.

Le Steak by Chef Amri is an affordable family-friendly steakhouse that is well-loved for their grilled chicken, sirloin steak and seared salmon -- all priced reasonably below $20. Even the desserts of bread pudding or creme brulee are a hit at just under $10. If you're in the Jalan Kayu area, this is the perfect place for dinner with your loved ones. Burppler Lydia Sonia says, "One of the best steak I tried. Juicy and tender, cooked to perfection."

Green Sky is known by many as having one of the best oyster omelettes you can find in Singapore. The omelette here is crispy, eggy and most importantly, loaded with fresh, plump oysters you can't get enough of. Also get the char kway teow -- it's not too wet, extremely tasty, and full of cockles and beansprouts that add a lovely crunch. Make sure you do not mix up Green Sky with Soon Lee, another stall with a similar signboard serving oyster omelette!

For rainy days or when you're feeling under the weather, porridge is arguably one of the best comfort foods. Housed in this coffeeshop along Serangoon Road is probably the best halal Taiwanese porridge you can find. If you like the watery kind of porridge, you'll like the porridge here. Expect a huge bowl to go with sides like kangkong, century egg, salted egg and sambal ikan bilis. The chilli that comes with it is pretty kickass too. Other than bubur Taiwan, they also serve typical dishes like maggi goreng and nasi goreng.

Having been drawing such large crowds, Badoque Cafe now has two branches to satisfy your cravings. Get the Beef Ribs to share -- fall-off-the-bone tender, lip-smacking ribs you'll be glad you ordered. If you're feeling in the mood for some seafood instead, go for the Mermaid's Tears or the Shrimp Laksa Fettucine. Just a note of caution: come here when you're feeling absolutely ravenous and/or with a group of friends, because their portions are huge!

Located in Days Hotel in the middle of Balestier, 21 on Rajah serves up a mix of Mediterranean cuisine and Asian favourites. They have a good buffet spread, and also offer a la carte mains ranging from items like paella and poitrine de poulet, to laksa and chicken curry. They encompass as much of the Mediterranean spirit in their decor as they do in their food, with a white and blue restaurant interior surrounding your culinary experience of authentic flavours of the region.

The term "hipster" might be a wee bit overused by now but ROUSE actually does check all the boxes for being a hipster cafe, complete with "brick" floors. This Muslim-owned spot makes good coffee with their house blend, specially roasted by Dutch Colony Coffee Roasters. The menu is rather interesting as well - think curry crab burger with sweet potato fries, beef-wrapped asparagus with pumpkin mash, and smoked salmon with poached eggs and a quinoa patty. It's a lovely space to chill at, even if you're just looking for a quick pick-me-up.
