Pasar Malam finds!

Pasar Malam finds!

Singapore does have a vibrant night market culture where its essentially the local and more affordable version of "pop-up" in the older days.

From Chub Tu Tu; one of the stalls at this year's Ramadan Bazaar at Punggol Field near Punggol Bus Interchange. While they do pretty traditional flavours such as plain, peanut and chocolate Kueh Tutu, the highlights from the stall are the special flavours — each special flavour (e.g. Green Tea, Strawberry and more) are only in a limited run for two days before the next special flavour takes over; a surprise awaits every visit.

It's worth noting that only the filling is if green tea flavour; the filling generally pasty inside with a hint of matcha aroma amidst the flavours of the flour often used in the making of Kueh Tutu. That being said, the Kueh Tutu feels a little bit on the dense side and a little cakey. Still, it's pretty interesting the variety of flavours they are bringing as a pasar malam stall; a twist to the familiar Kueh Tutu we know.

First, I must say that I have not tried BAKE's version so I have no idea how good this is compared to that, but I certainly feel the this is way better than the one served by Prima Deli. The tart itself was crusty and held up well without being too buttery, and just carried a really short cookie-like touch — fits very well with the lightly cheesy, smooth and luscious cream cheese within that's thick and indulgent without feeling excessively heavy. At $3.30 each, I would really recommend this for those who hadn't tried BAKE and wouldn't wait past an hour for cheese tarts (I got this one immediately for there wasn't anyone at the stall); this certainly set my standards if there is any chance of me going for one again. The Pasar Malam is situated beside Punggol MRT/LRT Station at the same exit as Waterway Point beside the bus interchange, and the stall is right at one of the entrances/exits of the bazaar; do keep a lookout for the egg tart and muffins on display on the counter for the stall; the baked cheese tarts are not displayed but only shown on the banner, but they would be happy to sell them to you if you ask. ;)

From Bakes and Crafts which is situated beside Happy Rollies. Three flavours of Churros are offered here; original, Red Velvet and Pandan. We opted for the Dulche Le Leche sauce for the original which was pretty similar to a milky caramel; pretty delicious. Red Velvet was cocoa-flavoured, but the lack of cream cheese in this felt like it was missing the point. Pandan remained as a favourite for all; the green sticks doused in Gula Melaka sauce was definitely an experience of its own. The Churros are well made too; the batter was fried to crisp without having it too soggy inside.

Was pretty much confused by the name Gorpis until someone told me it was just short form of "Goreng Pisang". Banana Cheese stalls are abundant in the Ramadan Bazaars these days with another stall operating within the Geylang Bazaar (which calls this snack Pisang Keju) while another is situated at the Woodlands Bazaar. The Chocolate flavour stood out more for this one rather than Milo which looks a tad unappetizing for its colour, and the chocolate sauce seemed to be more fitting somehow. Bananas could have been a bit more ripe on the day we tried though.

From the Happy Rollies stall which is situated right beside the Churros stall. Cream is slathered thinly on a chilled pan where the ingredients would also be included and smashed into smaller bits to integrate with the frozen cream which is then rolled before serving. Out of the lot the Lychee Strawberry flavour stood out the most; probably it was the only non-chocolate/Nutella flavour we actually had.

Another hipster catch at Woodlands Pasar Malam for this Hari Raya season. Coconut is frozen in a chiller and only filled with coconut ice-cream upon serving with choice of two toppings. Went with Atap seeds and Gula Melaka and was pretty refreshing and cooling with the rich flavours of coconut in the ice-cream. Be sure to dig on the shell for the coconut flesh, which is the whole point of having this dessert!

Yet another hipster finding at the pasar malam situated right beside Causeway Point. Coming in around six to seven pieces for a $4 portion, think of these as Goreng Pisang sprinkled with shaved cheese and chocolate sprinkles with a choice of sauce that you fancy; Condensed Milk, Nutella or Salted Caramel. The sweet and crisp fried banana with slight savoury shaved cheese comes pretty well with Condensed Milk, for it gives the bananas a different degree of sweetness. On a side note, this stall seemed to be run by the same folks who opened the Churros stall the previous time in the same Pasar Malam as they looked rather familiar and the stall setup seemed pretty identical too.

Here's a not-so-common find in Pasar Malams. Churrosome is one of the newer tenants in the Pasar Malam right beside Woodlands MRT Station which sells Churros in two variants; Salted Caramel and Chocolate. Churros were well-coated with cinnamon sugar and are fried on the spot, so its crisp outside though a tad hollow and cakey inside. Salted Caramel sauce was good but I would love a more generous portion as it barely covered the portion of Churros served. Quite affordable at $4 per tub with around 7 bite-sized portions that fixes your Churro cravings
