Cafe Grub
Tsk, just how many times do they intend to modify the Dashi Risotto? While their efforts to experiment and create new flavors is commendable, it's equally exasperating when each version turns out more disappointing than the previous 😔 I still remember how amazing the original version was, topped with wonderfully crispy fried mushrooms, and it had been the reason I kept revisiting the cafe. Can they bring that back, pleeaaseeeeee?
First I have to say the portion is crazy huge. Two palm-sized slabs of pork chops, two perfectly flow-y sunny-side ups drizzled in Dijon sauce and furikake toppings, and finally a side of Peranakan achar salad. The flavors were quite amazing but unfortunately let down by the toughness of the meat.
Got to admit I was quite skeptical about the combination of broccoli with red sugar and papadum at first, but these smokey florets proved to be the tastiest I've ever eaten. Even if you don't like broccoli, try this; it may just change your mind!
Ordered this with the thought that all deep fried cauliflower would taste as good as the ones I had at The Banana Leaf Apolo some months ago, but sadly these had a raw bitter taste and came nowhere close.
At $9.80 nett, the portion is rather generous! The special sauce that coated these breast meat strips tasted like a mix of garlic and sweet chilli, and was so good I wish they served extra on the side for more dipping!
Apart from the beef that was too tough, everything else about this dish is wonderful! Especially loved the potato rosti, soft egg, and the wilted spinach hidden beneath the yolk!
Not sure why the name, but this pool of tender pulled pork mixed in sweet barbecue sauce paired with creamy scrambled eggs served atop a piece of tortilla came in such a generous portion, it took me quite a long while to finally finish everything!
This small, minimally decorated cafe that seats no more than 20 pax is run by a friendly husband-and-wife team. The menu is quite limited, offering just some cakes and savoury pies baked by their friend. The chicken mushroom pie that I had was actually decent, in fact much better than the miserly filled one I ate at Pie Face the other day. Currently there's a promotion where u can get a pie and your choice of beverage at just $9.90.
Tender and moist, I almost mistook these for chicken. Not sure if they were intentionally made to be quite bland (that's what the dipping sauce is for right?), but I really wished they were flavoursome enough to be eaten on their own!
...is this hard-to-go-wrong plate of chicken wings
The lobster bisque sauce was a novel but fine complement to the soft and flaky halibut. Be sure to finish it asap though, for the sauce turned strangely yucky when it cooled down towards the end of the meal.
Looks not bad but tasted very plain. The cafe is very beautifully done up and you can tell lots of effort went into decorating it. They need to work harder on their food though!
