10 Places For Breakfast & Brunch In KL

Every so often, we wake up at a time of the day when it's a little too late for breakfast, but also too early for lunch. A sustaining meal in between comes in to save the day — that's the beauty of brunch. With this list, you can now sleep in, awake to a roaring appetite and set off in search of KL's best places to brunch!

VCR is one of those rare places that does it all — great coffee, delicious food and good vibes. For travellers spending some time in the city or locals looking to nail weekend brunches with a friend, this chic black shophouse is your stop! Expect skilled baristas to churn out your late morning Flat White (RM11) and for brunch, try the Granola (RM18). It's a simple, healthy pairing of their housemade granola, seasonal fresh fruit, Greek yoghurt and an irresistible oolong peach-infused milk that sets it apart from the rest. For something more wholesome, order the top dish: Potato Waffle (RM25). The moreish russet potato-based waffle offers a toothsome bite, and features mushroom fricasse, tomato fondue and a perfectly wobbly 63-degree celsius egg. The rather filling waffle is recommended for sharing, so you can save space for dessert! The cafe's famous French Toast (RM19) comes with a potent no-churn espresso ice cream.

This French bistro and boulangerie along Mid Valley's outdoor dining strip is Yeast's second outlet, and we like that it boasts much more space and easier parking than the first (in Bangsar). The interior inspires with French colonial accents and the food is classy, making it an elegant choice for brunch dates in the mall. Creamy and filling, the Ouefs Mollets Florentine (eggs Florentine, RM22) is a knockout here. Two soft boiled eggs are cooked over spinach and mushrooms, finished with a generous glaze of gruyere cheese, and served with a dense house-baked bread. For a meatier meal, go for their Confit de Canard (RM36). The crispy duck confit, sweet and fragrant of duck fat, comes with warm potatoes, caramelised onions and a side salad. If you're here on a Friday, thank happy hour for Kronenbourg beer that goes for RM17 a glass. Give the pastry section a good sweep before leaving, as their large and flaky Croissant (RM5.50) makes a tasty takeaway for tea.

Pioneers of the big breakfast culture in KL, Antipodean prides upon their healthy, hearty plates to please. Everything on the menu is cooked sans salt, making way for the natural flavours of fresh ingredients to come through. Coupled with its intimate space along Jalan Telawi 2, this is the perfect place to bring the parents. You will have to read their offerings off a blackboard menu on the wall, but we'll say skip the hassle and just order the Big Breakfast (RM25). The classic platter fills you up nicely with toast, mushrooms (lots of them), fluffy scrambled eggs, a homemade hashbrown and your choice of bacon or sausage — the lean back bacon reigns supreme. If you love eggs and salmon, go for an even simpler Scrambled Egg Salmon On Toast (RM22) to satisfy. Portions run big, so it'd be wise to share two dishes among mum, dad and you.

Set in a secluded but accessible row of shoplots in Section 17, Strangers at 47 warrants a visit for their delicious sweet and savoury crepes. The cafe's handpainted murals (done by local artist Hsulynn), contributes charm to the casual, spacious environment — great for outings with the gang. Do brunch right with their BBC (big breakfast crepe, RM24). The wholemeal crepe is boosted by a Spanish chicken sausage, butter sauteed portobello mushroom, baked beans and eggs (get the sunny side-up). There are also impressive meat-free options, such as the Lethal Shrooms (RM19.50) crepe that melds a medley of portobello, shimeji and oyster mushrooms with spinach. Not limited to dessert, the sweet selections are filling enough to pass as mains. Plus, they're much more affordable! Try the Kayaman (RM13), our favourite representation of
local flavours that sees a pandan coconut crepe packed with pisang goreng, coconut cream and vanilla ice-cream.

This beautiful cafe in Binjai8 may be new to the brunch scene, but it's certainly worth exploring for wholesome, affordable eats. Its city centre location is super strategic while the high ceilings and sun-filled settings are tell-tale of a good spot for brunch with the girls — cue #OOTD shots! There is also a play area for families looking to brunch with their little ones. We can't say no to the Pancakes with Berries And Honey (RM15), the fluffiest stack we've spotted in a long time. Though thicker in size, these are of a soft, pillowy texture made for mopping up honey drizzles. For a guilt-free brunch, look to the Botanist (RM22). The multi-grain toast is loaded with a crunchy-creamy combination of kale, broccoli, pea sprouts, mashed peas, and somewhere within those greens, a perfect poached egg. Don't miss out on dessert — the cafe serves up an intriguing Ra.Ft Bird Nest (RM12) that is actually a wonderfully warm and dense churros tart filled with ice-cream.

Nestled in a quiet area of Bangsar Village 2, this unpretentious cafe bustles with a crowd even on weekdays. The space is nothing-special but their food is what you should really come for. The menu has an excellent variety of meaty, greasy options, which makes it one of our top spots for a hangover brunch. What's more, the breakfast and brunch menu is served all-day so you don't have to worry about waking up late for the meal. Bring a friend for company — perhaps the one you had drinks with the night before — and order the Salted Beef Hash (RM24). The instantly remedying dish sees a fried egg atop sauteed potatoes, capsicums and salted beef chunks. Otherwise, tuck into the Southern Fried Breakfast (RM28). The Burpple community loves this dish for its scrumptious fried chicken and buttermilk biscuit combo that hits all the right notes of Southern flavours.

Refined brunch plates are the draw at the gorgeous Common Man Coffee Roasters in TTDI's Plaza VADS. The venue is classy without being too formal, so it's choice whether you're setting up a business brunch or catching up with a friend. While the beautiful coffee bar and adjacent learning academy are inviting features, it is the well-executed food that puts this cafe on our list. The Sauteed Kale And Egg White Scramble (RM29) wins us over with its tasty selection of greens (kale, asparagus, sweet pea and broccoli), as well as its appetising flavour that comes from a sprinkling of shaved parmesan and lemon zest crumbs. As always, the Common Man Full Breakfast (RM39) takes it home with full points for portion, variety and perfectly runny eggs. If not, the Organic Eggs Benedict (RM38) that stars tender braised ox cheeks instead of the usual bacon might blow your mind like it did Burpple Tastemaker Calie's.

Between their relaxed open-air area with cosy seatings within, this popular venue is almost always packed. Bring a close friend for this quality brunch experience and be early to snag a good seat. The food store, split into sections for bread, fruits and dining, is well-known for using fresh ingredients and these translate well into flavour. To share, we recommend the Wild Honey French Toast (RM24). Options for toppings run from passionfruit to strawberries, but be sure to go for the foolproof pairing of banana and bacon. Also get the Brunch Pasta with 7 Min Egg (RM22). Big on fresh produce, it's cooked with greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon and a single soft-boiled egg on top. But the real reason we love this dish, is that BreadFruits has managed to perfect this light but flavourful rendition of carbonara that allows maximum satisfaction with minimal guilt.

Located on the ground floor of the Troika building, Acme Bar & Coffee is a prime place for brunch with a breathtaking view. The best part: food is not exorbitantly priced. To impress a date at brunch or to celebrate occasions with a small group, book a table at this stunning loft-like cafe. The menu is renewed seasonally, but all versions bank on classic dishes with a modern touch to satiate. For now, look to the Picnic Bruschetta (RM49) for a fun brunch offering. Essentially a make-your-own picnic basket, the sharing dish (for two to three) comes with garlic toast, cold cuts, gherkin, chimichurri, babaganoush, brie cheese and dried fruits. This is especially alluring if you are seated in their outdoor area shrouded by greenery. Order also the Crispy Plaintain Dippers (RM23) to share. The healthy alternative to chips offers a better bite, and makes an addictive snack with the side of spicy anchovy guacomole, chimichurri and sour cream dip.

At this modern establishment in old Pudu, brunch is their yummy namesake, hoppers. The snazzy locale sports pink walls, neon lights and Bollywood posters — fun vibes for a day out with friends. If it's your first time at Hoppers, try the Slow Roasted Chicken Rendang Hopper (RM11). The nasi-lemak inspired hopper is topped with a tasty rendang chicken and nasi lemak trimmings — think anchovies, peanuts and cucumber. It's also quite filling for a hopper and thus, presents the most value for money in our books. We also found a favourite in a sweet appam, the Mango With Toasted Black Sesame And Coconut Milk (RM9). Laced with edible flowers, this is a pretty dish that straddles refreshing tropical flavours with a dash of creamy coconut milk. Regulars will be pleased to know that the kitchen now dishes out specials too! We hear of a vegetarian Slow Cook Chickpeas with Brown Rice & Millet Hopper (RM17) that's worth making a return visit for.
