Local Sweets š§
The sesame ice shavings were good - really soft and fine, and packed a punch of flavour. This came with a red bean topping, which is a classic flavour combination. Though you don't get as many toppings as in a bingsoo, at just $5-6 a bowl, the Snow Ice here is an affordable and really good option. They have it in a wide range of flavours (including DURIAN and SOURSOP) as well.
Oh boy what is this mess about? I blame my dad for the weird angle. These traditional ä¼ä» mooncakes aren't very common now but it's the kind my grandma likes. This was pretty good! There was lots of nuts, including whole macadamia nuts, and it wasn't too sweet. The ham wasn't noticeable though (my grandma thought it was orange peel LOL). The packaging was super gaudy - bright red box with gold motifs. My grandma loved it though hahaha.
Red Ruby is my favourite local dessert! For the uninitiated, it is a simple dessert of shaved ice flavoured with syrup and coconut milk (or evaporated milk), and topped primarily with chewy, crunchy starch-coated water chestnut pieces. The dessert stall at Tiong Bahru Market is generous with its toppings and drizzling of syrup and milk, so naturally its ice desserts are much tastier than the average stall. We need more stalls like this!
