If i could narrow down 5 reasons why I would go back to Hong Kong, this is one of them. We just arrived in our hostel from the airport and we were starving. We just spent about half an hour or so walking around the streets of Mongkok trying to find our hostel. We tried to decipher the map to the hostel which was actually just a business card and had to contend with the chinese characters and we painstakingly had to compare the street signs to what was written on our map. All that while lugging our huge bags around with us. When we finally found the hostel and dumped our luggage in our rooms we immediately hunted for a place to eat. We found this chinese restaurant and went inside. It was a tiny place and we were the only foreigners around. The waitress didn't speak a word of english but she gave us a menu with pictures and an english translation. We thought it'd be a breeze. But when we started ordering, that's when the confusion started. For example, if you want a noodle soup, you'd have to choose on a variety of noodles- yellow or white or thick or thin or spicy and not so spicy! The diminutive rice had it's own mind boggling selection of sticky or not sticky, a selection of fragrances and goodness knows what! I couldn't remember how long the order took us. But what we mostly did was pointed(turo) what we wanted on the menu for the waitress to see and then chose through a series of selections with whatever dish it was we ordered. I was happy with what I had though. It was a kind of soup with minced pork or beef and some noodles, thin mushrooms and 3 pieces of fried chicken wings. It was such satisfying meal partly because it was such a relief to have been finally served the food we ordered.

Meals used to be a necessity and they still are but they have also evolved into a social event especially when shared with friends. This wasn't an unremarkable dinner because I don't remember feeling unsatisfied. But I was having a great conversation with a friend and the food tasted good enough to not get in the way of the conversation. Maybe even more than good enough..
