More Reviews of good food at Islamic Restaurant

This is, without a doubt, the most flavourful, punchy version of biryani around.
.
Serving since 1921, the 3rd generation owners behind this Turkish-royalty inspired version has long-grain basmati rice infused with a secret blend of spices.
.
Each mouthful of the loose fluffy grains is a burst of grainy spice sweet savoury, seemingly a complex layer of more than 10 spices. Intense yet addictive.
.
The tender chunks of mutton fall apart softly, releasing robust meaty savoury salty spice flavours. Crunchy spiced cucumbers with vegetal sweet spice notes on the side.
.
A medium dalcha curry rounds this out, but the rice is tasty enough on its own, and in fact holds more flavour than the curry.
.
Little wonder this 100-year old establishment is frequented by royalty and celebrities.

Really good mutton briyani which had really fragrant rice and tender mutton. A bit pricey but a decent portion so it’s quite worth the price tag!

got the chicken one. good when mixed with gravy. sambal prawns was good too. no idea about the price of the other dishes ordered by my boss. only know this rice is 10. #islamicrestaurant #briyani #powerpluspac #powerpluspacxlocal #burpple #sgfood

My favorite place to dine in when i’m craving for a beryani dam where the mutton hide itself beneath the fragrant beryani rice and it comes with a dalcha curry and the cucumber acar.

For the side order, i love the tomato pachady ($2.50-1 pc). The sweetness of the tomato and slices of cashews complete everything.

Chicken πŸ— Briyani Set (I have seen biryani, beryani, breyani πŸ˜‚πŸ˜…) πŸ™‹πŸ»πŸ’isn't it briyani? Anyhoos, this was some the juicy, n the tender, n the plump chicken thigh that was served with the nasi, with the fragrant-licious curry! I think there were succulent slices of eggplants πŸ† in either one of the curry; Whoaaa they & the ACHAR!! were da bombz ! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ†πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ†πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌ I guess the right cooking methods really bring out the best flavors from nature foods! Yummeh !! πŸ‘…πŸ’¦πŸ’¦ curry chefs for Prata should consider loading em' good with some good ole πŸ†; πŸ˜‹πŸ’œ so it's approved βœ… if you order a set (@$13 I think) you get a fragrant local coffee/tea, a small serving of achar and an appam! Quite the deal lor, imo! πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ better still if you are seated upstairs, very vintage-y & a bit of titanic living room feel β›΄β›΄πŸ  the combi is either chicken or mutton briyani btw!

$13 would get you this Beryani set accompanied with Dachar, Achar and papadum. Everything you really need to satisfy that Indian craving in a comfortable air conditioned environment.

I enjoy the texture so much that I can eat it without mixing much masala, so that I can better feel the clearly separated grains.
.
I should also mentioned that gracing the walls of Islamic Restaurant are politicians from the region such as PM Lee, SR Nathan, late President Yusof Ishak and Malaysian PM Najib. .
However, I myself have been to several great briyani places in India and Dubai as well, so what I thought is lacking here is an even stronger aroma of the meat and spices in the rice, and saffron which is abundant and cheap in Dubai.

He is one who would miss briyani dearly when overseas, and would willing pay 40CHF (~S$60) in Switzerland, even if it's for a mediocre plate of nasi briyani. I showed him a food blog titled "10 Best Nasi Briyani in Singapore", and asked him which in the list he thinks are really worthy. He opined, only Islamic Restaurant and Allauddin from that list.
.
He said, "JT, the best briyani are the dum briyani. Dum means you cook the meat & the seasoning together with the rice. This is to transmit the aroma of the meat (mutton/chicken) & the seasoning (masala) onto the rice."
.
And so here we are, at one of his favourite briyani place in Singapore, for "dum briyani".

Chicken Beryani ($11)
It looked messy but flavourful with tender meat.
The restaurant has been around for many years. Our guide's grandfather used the restaurant to cater for his parents' wedding in the past.

A plate costs between $9-10 dollars, depending on your choice of meat. The mutton briyani is supposed to be the bomb. I had the chicken briyani and the rice is super good!

Ordered the chicken briyani and naan + butter chicken. Portion for the briyani is enormous along with the chicken wing which is hidden under this mountain of rice, quite worth the price if you can eat a lot. Briyani was pretty good, though I prefer mine cooked with a lot more spices haha. The naan and butter chicken was super good too, my friend ordered it and immediately fell in love. The bandung is good too, although a bit too concentrated (maybe it's just me). Price wise is gr8 for big eaters 😁 Would come back again πŸ‘

This place is supposedly to have the best biryani, and so why am I eating naan? Because it's one of the best in singapore (as according to my tastebud). It's the lightest and fluffiest naan I have ever tasted. Usually the naan is on the very doughy side, this naan is crispy one one side and soft on the other. And it's thin, not the usual thickness of a naan. So yummy you can have it on its own.

Sharing with you a food review of a guest blogger...my twin sister Cleo. Yes, I have a twin! And like me, she shares the same passion for great food! Enjoy Reading!😊

Islamic Restaurant is nestled amongst the various shops and restaurants near Arab St. Have I known about this restaurant before, my husband and I would have always come back here when we're craving for Nasi Biryani or Indian food. Not only was their food delicious, but their servings were big and their rates were very cheap! I read somewhere that they serve one of the best Biryani in Singapore and they were not joking about that. Although I'm not an expert in Biryani, I've had my fair share of them and theirs definitely made an impression. Their Fried Chicken Biryani was really delicious. The presentation was not good but I've learned here that you should not judge a book by its cover. The Biryani rice was definitely the star of the dish! The basmati rice was cooked just right. It used the right amount of aromatics and spices, and the gravy poured onto the rice was so flavorful. The fried chicken was juicy and tender. I like that they offer breast part as well (which is the part of the chicken that I prefer) since some restaurants only have the thigh part available.

I must admit that some of their Indian food was just at par. Their Butter Chicken was good but compared to the ones I've had before, it was less creamy and the morsels of chicken were definitely smaller. Also, their Garlic Naan was not garlicky enough for me. Their Keema Mattar and Dal Fry made up for it though. I'm not a fan of mutton because of its gamey aftertaste but the minced mutton in their Keema was not like that. I can subtly sense its gaminess and the green peas were not too mushy. I enjoyed it to the point that I was able to eat several helpings of it. Their Dal Fry on the other hand, was very tasty and had the right balance of spices for me. I would have to say that they should have a light hand in using ghee though since it was a bit oily.

The Mango Lassi was very refreshing, my husband and I really liked it. It had the right amount of sweetness and tanginess and you can really taste the mango. Hmmm...I wonder what mango they used since it was really good!

As for the Caramel pudding that I had for dessert, I have to say...I was quite surprised that they offer this. It's the same as our country's delicacy called "Leche Flan". I didn't know that Islamic and/or Indian cuisine also have this. Actually, had I known, I would have opted for another dessert. It's not that it was not good, it was...but if I would compare it to the one I make, I prefer mine any time of day...Lol! Theirs was a bit firmer and less creamy. I can tell that their rendition had a bit of egg whites mixed in. The caramel sauce would have been better if they squeezed a bit of lemon to it just to balance out the sweetness.

Overall though, I really enjoyed my experience here. It was just disappointing that there were a lot of dishes that were not available when we went there (according to them, it was because their real chef was not around and will only be back after 2 weeks). Now, there's a reason for us to come back soon...to try the other dishes that we've missed and to test out their "real" chef's cooking.

They serve really tender chicken thigh with the nasi beryani (apparently the best beryani in SG), I liked the butter chicken too it goes well with naan, but their Mango lassi is overly sweet though 🍹 Download @PickatSG app to enjoy 50% off on the 3rd set when you order 2 beryani (till 27th Feb)! #PickatSG #Pickateer #islamicrestaurant

$9, served with Acha and dhal. Huge serving. Well flavoured rice with tender chunky chicken.

Fluffy rice, flavorful and tender mutton in a no-pretense environment. Perfect for a weekday dinner.

Open since 1921 and known as the best briyani restaurant for many years past, Islamic Restaurant has a long history. Having moved down the street, the restaurant retains its old world charm with photos of famous patrons over the years, and allows you to dine comfortably in air-con. Go for the mutton over the chicken briyani, tender meat with beautifully light, fragrant, high-quality basmati rice. The fish and prawn briyani are good too. While it is arguably no longer the best, it is an excellent briyani. Photo by Jayne Tan

This restaurant used to be really famous in the 70s for their biryani, so of course I had to check it out! The mutton biryani was really good, especially compared to the chicken biryani. The texture of the rice is excellent and speaks of the quality of rice used, but could be more flavorful. The meat was just awesome, a very tasty, tender, generous portion. Will be back if I'm in the area!

I feel like this is the best briyani.

so back to islamic down the road again.

got ourselves a mutton briyani, sambal prawn and mango lasso this time round. same as our previous meal here, rice was quite bland but flavourful after mixing everything together. the mutton was tender and it was not too gamey. i could accept it.
-
the sambal prawn tasted very home cooked with a nice seafood aftertaste. mango lassi is your normal sweet mango smoothie to beat the heat. these were enough for the both of us.
-
$25 for all 3 items.
