It's been a good month since the borders opened, and this has caused a small bump in the number of eateries opening in Johor.

For Great Coffee
Not necessarily a new venue, as they previously had an outlet that operating in Sutera Mall for some time now. This outlet in Eco Botanic has just opened it's door earlier this month and is lauded for its aesthetic interior and splendid coffees. The main attraction here would be their dedication to using 100% Arabica beans, try out their Yirgacheffe (RM19), which is Ethiopian dripped Arabica that comes from a town of the same name. This roast has a clean, acidic note as well as a fruity, floral after taste with hints of roasted coconut.

For Fresh Seafood In The City
Similar to Tom&Danny, Nelayan is not a new name to the Johor seafood scene, but this outlet has made it much easier for city dwellers to get fresh seafood. Nelayan has been operating for some time at Desaru, and that is almost 2 hours away from the city, however with their new outlet smack dab in the middle of the city it will only take you around 15 to 20 minutes to enjoy some fresh Hong Kong style grouper. We've also covered them in a separate article, check it out here to know the best eats there
The Lightwood by MuesPhoto by The Lightwood Cafe
For Amazing Pastries
Instagram-able cafe's are pretty abundant in Johor, but only a fine few are truly Insta-worthy, and The Lightwood is a worthy one indeed. The path leading to the cafe is a pretty tall flight of stairs, that opens up into an industrial themed zen-garden-esque yard, with the windows to the café having ledges that act as frames for your OOTD shot. The interior of the café is not neglected either, as you have a corner filled with natural light that floods in from the skylight built above, slightly shaded with tasteful orange drapes and branches of their indoor planted trees, creating a beautiful canopy. It's a feast for the eyes indeed, but let's focus on the feast for our tummies, the cinnamon roll (RM6) is our favorite, soft, fluffy and not too sweet. All baked goods are made fresh daily so you can't go wrong with any of them.
Roots BistroPhoto by Roots
For Amazing Sourdough And Vegetarian Food
Roots is probably the only restaurant in Johor where you can sit don and enjoy a wide variety of artisanal sourdough breads, even their Pizza crust is sourdough that has been fermented for 36 hours. Speaking of Pizza's, their wide selection of vegetarian friendly pizzas are absolutely amazing, each dusted with a layer of semolina flour to give their crust a crunchy exterior. Try out the classic satay or Sambal Petai pizzas (RM29 for 9 inch), both incorporating local flavors into an artisanal pie. Be sure to try out their sourdough focaccia as well as other freshy baked goods they have for sale.
