Where to Find Healthy and Delicious Mala Mix?

Xiao Gu Jie Jie Mala Tang has opened its first outlet in Singapore, located at SMU. We tried some of their offerings and here’s what we think:

Mala Mix (Dry) 招牌麻辣拌 ($2.48/100g)
This is not your usual Mala Fragrant Dry Pot. Here, the ingredients you pick from their counter, featuring over 88 items, are blanched, not cooked with the mala mixture in the pot. You then mix the ingredients yourself, making it a dry mix rather than the traditional wet mix. This approach preserves the crunchiness and natural flavours of the ingredients instead of letting the mala overpower them, making it a healthier option. However, there’s a minimum weight requirement of 300g.

You can also choose other soup bases like Bone Soup, Spicy Mala Soup, and Tomato Soup. The original price is $2.98/100g, but as their first outlet in Singapore, they’ve priced it at $2.48/100g, great value, no matter what you pick! Whether you go for seafood, meat, veggies, processed food, or noodles, you can curate a "profitable" set for yourself.

You can adjust the spice level when ordering, and they provide a sauce and condiments section to tweak the flavours further or create your own dipping sauce.

Marinated Frog Meat Noodles w Sichuan Sauce 田鸡面 ($8.50)
Delicate frog meat served over noodles with a savoury Sichuan sauce. The frog meat was tender and easily deboned when chewed, though there were still a lot of bones to navigate. The noodles were chewy and infused with the sauce, but slightly lumpy. It might be a bit spicy for some.

Marinated Pork Noodles w Sichuan Sauce 浑燃面 ($6)
Tender marinated pork paired with noodles in a spicy Sichuan sauce. The flavours were robust and tastisfying, though the noodles tended to clump together. Thankfully, the provided soup helped add moisture. This dish leaned more toward a sour, spicy, meaty flavour profile.

Mala French Fries 凉拌薯条 ($3.50)
Crispy French fries tossed in spicy mala seasoning, offering a Sichuan-inspired twist to this classic snack. A flavourful and unique treat.

Cheese Fries ($4)
Thick-cut fries drizzled generously with nacho cheese and mayonnaise. Simple, comforting, and delicious.

Brown Sugar Glutinous Rice Cake w Ice Jelly 红糖糍粑冰粉 ($3.80)
Soft glutinous rice cakes served with ice jelly and topped with sweet brown sugar syrup. A large, refreshing dessert that was light on sweetness. The jelly was easy to slurp, and the dessert overall was cooling and tastisfying.

Traditional Sichuan Desserts w Brown Sugar 红糖凉虾 ($3)
Rice cakes shaped like shrimps (hence the name “Cold Shrimp”), served with brown sugar syrup. While traditional, the rough texture of the rice cakes wasn’t as enjoyable as the smoothness of other desserts like liang gao.

Brown Sugar Liang Gao 红糖凉糕 ($3)
A sweet and chewy round rice cake dessert paired with rich brown sugar syrup. This dessert had a smoother texture than the Cold Shrimp, making it more enjoyable. The smoothness might come from the sieving process during preparation.

Sichuan Jelly w Watermelon 西瓜冰粉 ($3)
Ice jelly topped with sweet watermelon bits. A refreshing and cooling dessert, perfect after a spicy meal.

Sichuan Jelly w Rose 玫瑰冰粉 ($2.80)
Fragrant rose-flavoured ice jelly with a floral, delicate sweetness. Be sure to mix well, as the rose flavour is concentrated at the bottom.

Homemade Ice Lemon Tea 自制柠檬茶 ($1.60)
A mildly sweet and refreshing lemon tea with a balanced tea flavour and a hint of lemon zest.
