Imagine an American style Chinese takeaway setting up shop at their newest outlet at Hougang Mall, and you've got Wok Hey. Sure it sounds stupid, but Wok Hey ain't just about suckering dumb, clueless Caucasian folks, their wok wonders can actually withstand the test of an Asian tongue.

They offer a quartet of different bases, and I selected the fried ramen one with grilled chicken for $6.80, and added on a healthy serving of capsicums and lup cheong (Chinese sausage) for an extra dollar each.

Oddly enough, it tasted more sweet than smoky, contrary to its name, but the wok hei was definitely there. Soft, slightly springy ramen was fried in a sweetish, salty sauce along with the juicy slices of chicken fillet and some superbly caramelized slices of onion.

Overall, despite overselling themselves a bit, it’s pretty good for a Chinese takeaway stand that can hold its own against the more usual coffeeshop zi chars. Also, did I mention that they’re halal?
