Assam Fish Rice Bowl

$17.90 Ā· 5 Reviews

Believe it or not, this hole in the wall serves up pretty good and healthy dishes with vegan options! The cafe presents a quiet and comfortable ambience complemented with warm lighting and an open kitchen - perfect for a 1-to-1 meet up with your closest friends.

The Assam Fish Rice Bowl ($17.90, back) gave a good first impression with its rainbow colours and an assortment of ingredients. That blob of fish pieces coated in a thick red gravy may not seem appealing, but it sure packs a punch as the nonya spice slowly infuses your palate and kicks you with the chilli. A really impressive dish!

The Norway-inspired Open Sandwich ($12.90, front) comprised of a vegan patty made out of lentils, mushrooms and almonds, sitting atop one whole portebello mushroom and wholegrain toast. Once again, a good impression was given as the earthy fragrance of the mushrooms assailed my nostrils. The vegan patty and cashew mayonnaise were indeed flavourful, but I wasn't too pleased with the patty being crumbly - it kept breaking apart whenever I stick my fork and knife in. Perhaps a little binding agent to hold the patty together will be good! Also, the bread tasted a little stale and I found it hard for all the components to harmonise well together.

Nonetheless, I love this cafe for its extensive menu of wholesome dishes and chill vibes. Would definitely return to try other dishes, especially their desserts!

Tucked within newish shopping mall NEWest in West Coast, this cosy, wood-accented cafe offers a menu packed with nutritious and flavourful dishes, and the warm ambience makes it ideal for an intimate dinner catch-up. One of the co-owners is a trained health coach, so we know our nutrition is in good hands. While the focus is not solely on vegetarian dishes (non-vegetarians must try their super flavourful Nonya-inspired Assam Fish Rice Bowl, $17.90), there are tons of meat-free options like the Norway-Inspired Open Sandwich ($12.90), which sees wholegrain toast topped with vegan patties (made from sweet potato, lentils and almonds), portobello mushrooms, house made chimichurri dressing and cashew mayonnaise. They are able to customise and prepare vegan or vegetarian versions of many other items on their menu ā€” points for flexibility! For sweets, try CoCo Madness ($8.90), which sees a slice of moist gluten-free Coconut Almond Cake ($6.90) served with vegan whipped coconut Valrhona chocolate cream and vegan maple coconut mousse, all made in-house!

If you've ever associated clean eating with boring and tasteless fare, Thrive Kitchen may just be the place to change your mind. Tucked in the middle of new and currently quiet shopping mall NEWest in West Coast, the cosy space (all warm lighting and light wood) makes an inviting spot for a quiet meal with a friend. They have recently launched their full food menu, which sees tons of flavourful and nutritious eats, from wholemeal pastas to rice bowls and hearty mains. For a meatless meal, you're in for a treat with the Thrive Benedict ($12.90), which sees pillowy multigrain toast topped with mashed avocado, perfectly wobbly sous vide eggs and a super delish cashew mayonnaise. The star of the meal, however, was the Nonya-inspired Assam Fish Rice Bowl ($17.90). The assam sauce would wake you right up with its zingy hit of flavours, and we're pretty sure it would get nods of approval from Peranakan matriarchs. It's spicy, but absolutely worth the sweat. For sweets, try a slice of their moist gluten-free Coconut Almond Cake ($6.90), or a scoop of Despicable, a creamy banana and walnut ice cream. Will we be back? You bet.

I'll drive 30 minutes from east to west just to eat this Nonya-inspired Assam Fish Rice Bowl ($12.90) - I'm even confident the picky bibiks in my family would approve of the zingy, appetising sauce that packs a punch of heat. So good.
