I ❤️ a hearty beef sandwich or steak for my lunch. [Round II]

Back again. This time for their butcher’s breakfast which has all my favourites — Roasted potatoes 🥔, scrambled eggs 🥚, handmade sausage and Black Angus picanha [a.k.a. rump cap] steak slices with that extra thick strip of fat [a.k.a. fat cap]. Meat lovers, rejoice! 🎉

The combination of succulent fat cap that literally melts in my mouth and juicy, tender meat is indescribably ADDICTIVE! 🤩

I ❤️ a hearty beef sandwich or steak for lunch.

Found this no-frills deli at a quiet mall — Clementi Arcade along Sunset Way that serves an AWESOME beef pastrami sandwich 🥪!

Layers of tender & thinly-sliced, smoked pastrami sandwiched in between toasted sourdough with shredded pickled cabbage, cheese and slathered with honey mustard for full-bodied flavour. A true delight for Meat lovers like ME! 😋

It does seem that Penny University is pretty much on a roll ever since their move out of their Joo Chiat space which they were located at previously; while they have moved into a space at Jalan Klapa since then, they also seemed to have started 2024 with a bang — not only are they operating a brand new space at Wisma Geylang Serai, they also do have another outlet that is a tie-up with Deli by The Meatery at Clementi Arcade along Sunset Way. Both stores ran their soft launch on the same weekend; the Clementi Arcade location being appropriately named as Deli by The Meatery | Penny University to better reflect the collaboration between the two. Deli by The Meatery | Penny University takes over the former premises of the now-defunct State of Affairs location at Clementi Arcade, itself being a corner unit that one would first see at Clementi Arcade if one takes a walk down to Sunset Way via Clementi Road. Most of the interior furniture and fittings have been kept similar to that from the space when it was still State of Affairs; the interior being decked in an industrial theme that features concrete walls and floors with geometrical shapes in a darker shade for some contrast, while the dine-in furnishings feature metallic and wooden accents — a look that is easy to the eyes. For Deli by The Meatery | Penny University, the food menu is taken care of by Deli by The Meatery; The Meatery being an independent gourmet butchery located at Jalan Gelenggang that retails halal-certified cuts of meat at that location. Here, the food menu curated by them comes segregated into sections comprising of All Day Breakfast, Kids’ Meal, Sandwiches and Burgers; there is also a dessert menu that comprises of some bakes in a page of the menu that is kept unbranded. The beverage menu would comprise of Penny University’s offerings, which includes Boogie Juice (i.e. their specialty coffee, available in both hand brew and espresso-based formats, as well as a line-up of mocktails, drinking chocolates, teas and juices.

Skimming through the various food items that they have to offer on the menu, one of the items that really stood out a little bit more for us would be the Ayam Percik Burger — most of the items on the menu curated by Deli by The Meatery comprises of dishes with a more western touch, be it their All Day Breakfast, Kids’ Meal, Sandwiches and Burgers offerings; despite it not being an item that is marked to be their top picks, the Ayam Percik Burger felt unique considering how there was a fusion of Southeast Asian flavours in this particular offering as compared to the rest of the other items. Deli by The Meatery describes the Ayam Percik Burger to come with elements such as Crispy Battered Chicken dipped in Sos Percik, Pickled Onions and Romaine Lettuce in Brioche Burger Buns. By all means, this is quite a well-sized burger considering the price especially; the Brioche Burger Buns already being quite substantially sized, but the Crispy Battered Chicken still manages to edge out of the buns nonetheless. It is also noted that all items listed on the “Burgers” section of the menu also come with Potato Chips on the side as well.

Digging into the Ayam Percik Burger, we found that the Brioche Burger Buns were light and fluffy; carried a slight buttery note along with it as well. The top layer of the bun is being spread with the Sos Percik; directly underneath the bun would be the pickled onions and the Sos Percik that is smothered all over the Crispy Battered Chicken. It is interesting to note how it seems that the crispy battered chicken doesn’t really come with a hint of turmeric that would add a yellow hue to the meat, but the chicken was still nicely brined for a bit of flavour. The texture of chicken was on-point; juicy and tender, though best to be enjoyed when it is being served rather than being left there for a while — this is because the chicken flesh does get dried out after a while. That being said, the golden-brown batter of the fried chicken was crisp without being greasy; carried a very light hint of pepper that may not be that detectable to some. What we really loved here was the Sos Percik; that same sauce / gravy that usually would come alongside Ayam Percik that carries a coconut-y fragrance that is not only just Lemak, but also came with a hint of the spices that they have used — the pickled onions adding a bit of a crunch and a tangy note that gives the burger a bit of a flavour contrast. The Sos Percik is also not noted to be anything spicy for our tastebuds if one was to be concerned of the level of spiciness for the sauce / gravy itself. As gets beneath the Crispy Battered Chicken; that is where the Romaine Lettuce — an element that is likely added to provide some form of balance for the burger with some greens. The potato chips that came on the side was nothing impressive though; quite generic and something which we could probably do without to get more greens on the side instead.

Meanwhile, we also had the Spiked Muddy from the beverage menu that Penny University serves at the Clementi Arcade location; the Muddy Espresso mitself being what some places would call the “Dirty” — a shot of espresso steeped into chilled milk. The Spiked Muddy itself on the other hand will be the infusion of Gula Melaka into the standard Muddy Espresso from Penny University. The Muddy Espresso provides quite a caffeinated kick even amidst the chilled milk, with the earthy sweetness of Gula Melaka being able to be felt at the back of the tongue. It is great having to see Penny University be in collaboration with another brand for this particular concept at Clementi Arcade — Penny University has always been known for their specialty coffee, though the establishment can also be described as a little stagnant with their food offerings; having the folks at Deli by The Meatery breathes new life into the concept of this particular outlet. Prices of the food at Deli by The Meatery | Penny University are range from $12.80 to $19.80 — the lowest priced item being the Breakfast Burrito, while the priciest would be the Roast Beef Sandwich. Location might be w little difficult to get to, but we reckon that Deli by The Meatery | Penny University is likely a concept that would be well-loved by residents around this neighbourhood — also a more convenient location for those whom have yet to try Penny University for how they had always been an establishment more associated with being in the East side of Singapore.
