Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique had really come a long way indeed; from their initial opening at The Red House in Katong, they had been making waves in the local F&B scene with their botanically-inspired gelato flavours tahag was something that is not quite seen around at the period of time. With 2023 coming to an end, the scene is now aplenty of gelato / ice-cream parlours; some even using generic pre-mixes from suppliers, with flavours that seem to be inspired by the more popular flavours that Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique had introduced. Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique had also grown up quite a fair bit, being almost a local icon for gelato with various locations around the island — this includes significant locations with tourist footfall such as that of Jewel Changi Airport and Mandai Wildlife West. Their latest outlet is situated in Holland Village; Holland Piazza to be the exact despite most new establishments choosing to open in the snazzier One Holland Village development. Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique takes over the now-defunct Oporto that has vacated the premises for quite a while; one can only say that there is a fair bit of work that went into the interior decor of the new Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique, with the establishment dedicating the left side of its space for the food preparation and counter. The right side of the space is a terraced dine-in space where patrons sit on platforms to enjoy their gelato. There is a natural theme that runs consistently in the space with the use of faux rocks and stone finishing within the store.
Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique has been really consistent in their offerings across their different location with the exception of its Mandai Wildlife West space; that is the only location where coffee, toasties and the Orange Zest Pouf Pancake are all exclusively served at — their other locations sees the offerings of gelato served in cups or in their signature Thyme cones only. With that being said, the Holland Piazza outlet does boast of an outlet-exclusive flavour — the Orange Yoghurt Gelato. Whilst skimming through the gelato flavours that they have to offer, we chanced upon the Osmanthus Pear Sorbet which got us fairly intrigued since this sounded much like their signature Spiced Pear flavour offered since Day One but with a slight twist.
Based on the description stated on the description card placed at the front of the display chiller, the Osmanthus Pear Sorbet comprises of Osmanthus flowers, Oolong, peach blossoms, mandarin and pear — we also opted for the Osmanthus Pear Sorbet to come with the Thyme Cone. The Osmanthus Pear Sorbet does indeed remind us of their Spiced Pear flavour quite a fair bit, but this certainly bore a more floral hint of flavours at the start and lacks the notes of the spices used for the Spiced Pear flavour; the result being this really soothing flavour that is floral and with a hint of aromatics from the other elements such as the mandarin — all that coupled with a light tinge of fresh sweetness from the pear that finishes everything off. The consistency of the gelato here is of that which would be very familiar to those whom have had any gelato from Osmanthus Pear Sorbet — very smooth and creamy but not too dense, even despite being a sorbet that should not come with milk content. Considering the floral notes in the flavour, this paired well with the Thyme Cone that carried a distinct herb-y note with a slight tinge of sweetness to lift the flavours up a little. Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique has been pretty consistent in terms of its creativity in flavours and quality of its offerings — a reason why it seemed to have remain quite as popular even over the years and almost being a name synonymously affiliated with artisanal gelato fit to represent our island nation. Wishing these folks all the best with the opening of their new location, and we can’t wait to return back to their Mandai Wildlife West location to give the Orange Zest Pouf Pancake a go!
