It does seem like the trend for scrambled egg rice bowls hadn’t quite stopped despite it being around for quite a while at this juncture; whilst Dan Lao 蛋佬 is the one that has started the trend and also had been opening a number of outlets and different concepts of the same brand all over the island, it seems that other establishments had probably seen the potential of scrambled egg rice bowls and had very much started to follow suit. Asia Scrambled Egg is one of the few new players that had entered the scene that specialises in the said item — also one of the newest tenants that had recently moved into the My Kampung food court at Kallang Wave Mall. A concept by the same folks behind Mentai SENS, these folks are a halal F&B establishment considering how My Kampung is an entirely halal food court; the menu at Asia Scrambled Egg being segmented into several sections but all focusing on their scrambled egg offerings – this would include the Signature Mentaiko, Chilli Crab Saucd, Salted Egg Sauce, Honey BBQ Sauce, Asian Curry, Sweet & Sour Sauce, Baked Cheese and Scrambled Egg Salad. There is also a list of side dishes that one can order whilst at Asia Scrambled Egg.

Whilst our expectations of a bowl of scrambled egg rice would be one that comes with runny and fluffy scrambled eggs, it felt like as though the folks at Asia Scrambled Egg got the wrong memo — our order of the Asian Curry Fried Chicken Scrambled Egg Rice saw the inclusion of fried chicken where one would typically expect if going for a Chicken Karaage Don at a coffeeshop stall serving up Japanese cuisine. Coupling the fact that the egg that came with the Asian Curry Fried Chicken Scrambled Egg Rice was served with what seems to be closer to Japanese-style curry and came with what seemed to be more like an omelette, this felt closer to that of an Omu rice dish from a coffeeshop / food court / hawker centre stall — nothing quite like the scrambled egg rice bowl that we were expecting and hoping to get. All was fairly standard here; nothing much to shout about, while the Asian Curry Fried Chicken Scrambled Egg Rice also comes with the Japanese red pickles that provided a crunch and a zesty note that refreshes the tastebuds. We also went for the Mentaiko Tamago just to give their Mentaiko offerings a try — since we had never given Mentai SENS a go previously anyway. The Tamago here is soft; a little bit on the sweeter side of things whilst being drenched with Mentaiko mayonnaise over the top; the portion of Mentaiko mayonnaise being pretty adequaute considering how it covers the surface of the Tamago — itself also having gone through the blowtorch for a smokiness amidst the umami notes that it brings. Overall not an establishment that we would be keen on returning again unless they could look into serving scrambled eggs the right way — rather disappointing considering how things were executed so differently from what they fundamentally intend to serve up.
