My family and I queued up for 2 hours for our dinner!! Yes - 2 whole hours!! When we got to the restaurant - they had just opened for business and I believe the first group of customers may have just gone in and took up every available seats in this not-too-big restaurant. I did a rough count - there were about 30+ seats? Took about 1 hours before we started to inch forward in the queue - some people got tired and left the queue. That helped! You should have seen the look on my wife’s face - she was obviously not happy being there and having to wait this long. Lol. .
By the time we got ushered in - at 8:30pm - we were all so hungry that we didn’t care if we were given the counter seats - which wasn’t that bad cos I had a good view of the kitchens and could watch how they grilled their fish. Anyway, soon after we were seated - we zeroed in on to the salad bar. Not as wide a range as the other Keisuke place - like Hamburg Steak Keisuke - but it was still decent - fresh vegetables, tofu, potato and soba salad, Japanese pickles, etc.

I had the Charcoal Grilled Miso Marinated Halibut - the texture of the fish was smooth, tender and soft - and the miso marinate was flavourful - and had a good savoury-sweet balance. I enjoyed it!

“How was it..?”, I asked my wife. “Not bad” - came the reply - “but not worth the wait...!!” Well, I’d have to agree with her...!!

Bummer. So what did I do? I surfed the internet for recommendations and ended up at Kocik Kitchen - well, it should be good right - especially since the article ranks it as one of the top 5 Nonya Restaurants in Melaka. Well, it wasn’t...!!

Maybe I got myself to blame cos I didn’t realise that they serve halal dishes there. Nothing against them being halal - but it just isn’t Ngor Hiang when it’s made with minced chicken which made it really dry. And their Ayam Buah Keluak was no better - the chicken pieces were tough and the gravy diluted. This may sound harsh - but I think this may be the worst Ayam Buah Keluak that I’ve had. The rest of the dishes were - sigh...
.
But what made up for it was the ambience and colourful interior decor of the place which I really liked.

PS - I totally forgot about Aunty Lee which I know serves good Peranakan food, and my other colleagues claimed that Lin Neo Delight was pretty good too!

This may not be from some famous Hainanese Chicken Rice store - but it was still good with its fragrant and fluffy rice, and it’s tender and juicy steamed chicken - worked for me...!!

In any case, I’m glad not knowing what to eat doesn’t happen too often for me ☺️...!

So when I saw “Ika Geso Karaage” (Deep fried Squid Tentacles) on the menu - I didn’t know what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised how nice it tasted and I was glad I ordered it cos I’m usually not that adventurous when it come to trying new food...especially seafood!

The lightly battered golden brown squid tentacles was flavourful, mildly salty and delightfully crunchy on the outside, while tender on the inside. Served with a deep fried Shishito and a lemon wedge - this side dish would taste great either on its own, or with cold beer, or sake...!! I must add that this can be quite addictive too, and I kid you not...!!

So glad I tried it and Ika Geso Karaage is definitely going to be one of my favourite foods from now on...!!

The Chendol from Jonker 88 is a must-have whenever I visit Melaka. Loved the generous topping of thick and gooey Gula Melaka (palm sugar) that they drizzle over the coconut milk coated shaved ice. It was refreshingly good...even if I had to eat standing up cos the place was soooo packed - there was not way that i was going to get a seat anytime soon.

Anyway, will I get to have my 3rd bowl tomorrow...?? Will see...!!

The store is tucked away in the northern part of Singapore - within Lucky Star Eating House in Marsiling.

The meat was tender and has just the right amount of fat to keep the char siew moist. Well, you can request for leaner meat for the health conscious - but the fats made it taste a lot better. .
Their Roast Pork Belly (Siew Yoke) was equally good... thin crunchy skin with layers of moist meat and buttery fats...and it was also not overly salty. Well, you’d just have to try it to believe it...!! Having this for lunch is always so shiok...!!

So decided to bring my daughter and nephew with me on one of my day off to roam the streets - armed with our camera and mobile phones.

We started at Fort Canning and then headed to The Esplanade en route to the MBS area. And since it was lunch time - and I could ready see how tired my daughter was - we decided to take her suggestion and eat at Old School Delights. This place located within The Esplanade serves local delights.

It was an interesting place - the place brought me back to my school days - eating in my school tuck shop! The tables and benches were all arrange in rows - just like in the tuck shop. And when it’s time to order, you write it with a marker onto a whiteboard. And if you food takes too long to be served - no sweat - you can occupy your time with the five stones and erasers provided at every table.

Anyway, I ordered the Old School Grilled Chicken Choo. The lightly seasoned chicken thigh was tender and juicy - and it was served with a small portion fries, salad, baked beans and some slaw on an enamel plate.

The food was alright - but if I should come again, I won’t be coming back because of the food - but because it was nostalgic and it was just fun...!!

Themis bowl of Signature Rib lunch set came with a bowl with 3 Ribs, Steamed Rice, Tao Pok, Salted Vegetables, You Tiao and a drink. The meat on the ribs were tender and didn’t take too much effort to tear the meat off its bones. The broth was flavourful and peppery, but not overpowering...and the best part of it - and I’m sure you already know - it was refillable...!! And boy, was it filling - I couldn’t even finish the rice and drink.

After after a long day wandering the streets in Taipei - we just wanted to have a quick dinner and head back to the hotel to crash.

Found this beef bowl stall at the basement foodcourt at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Mall (Taipei Nanxi) near Zhongshan Station. If you like grilled beef, this beef bowl would satisfy - the mountain of meat was well marinated, tender and it complemented the charred taste ... and good value for your money too. (NT$220 - approx. S$9.60)

We ordered the The Super Mango Snowflake Ice with Sorbet. We waited for our number to be displayed before collecting our really big bowl of shaved ice with fresh mango cubes, a scoop of mango ice cream on top with mango syrup drizzled all over the mountain of goodness!! This is definitely a dessert to be shared. Was it good - you betcha!!

So how did we end up there? You see, all we wanted was a bowl of 牛肉面 for lunch after visiting Taipei 101. After much walking trying to find a beef noodle store and to no avail - we were then told to head to Dongmen Station - apparently there is a beef noodle store near the station. So we went... only to find a long queue outside the store.

Surprisingly, the queue moved quite fast and before long we were ushered to a table with another couple who were already having their meal. I ordered the Braised Beef with Noodles in Spicy Broth, while my wife ordered the Clear Broth Beef Noodles. We also ordered some Spicy Dumplings and sides dishes.
.
Even though the place was packed - the noodles didn’t take long to be served. The first thing that caught my eyes were those huge chunks of meat - this was unlike the miserable slices we have in our version of Beef Noodle. The Beef was tender, the broth was flavourful - and although it’s supposed to be spicy, it wasn’t. And before you eat, don’t forget to scoop a spoonful of the salted vegetable into your noodle to give that added flavour to it.

So if you happen to visit Taipei and want a bowl of 牛肉面, don’t be like us - don’t need to go hunting for one - just head directly to Dongmen station and have your fill of the Taiwanese beef noodle at 永康牛肉麺館!!
