One of my favourite supper places is Wan Dou Sek (ζΎε°ι£) or better known as 126 Dim Sum in Geylang along Sims Ave.
The establishment appears to be a hole in the wall from the outside but once you go through the PVC strip curtains at the entrance, you see many eager and hungry patrons ready to dig in.
I love most of the dishes but my heart is reserved for the Chee Cheong Fun served with a unique thick sweet sauce, huge King Siew Mais with loads of flavours and crunch, Shrimp Dumplings with the translucent skin and thick shrimps and the light yet tasty century egg minced pork porridge.
I have a few issues with the place. Firstly, there are many food outlets and heh... hotels in the area so parking is scarce. Secondly, the seating in the restaurant is also limited and cramped unlike Swee Choon. Thirdly, poor attention to detail as some of the shrimp in the dim sums are not deveined and you can see that long black colon running through its back.
Overall, great place, great food and opened 24 HOURS DAILY!
Really economical economical rice!
Located on the second floor of the dingy Parklane Shopping Mall along Selegie Rd is Isle Eating House. The queues here are spectacularly long but they are constantly moving.
The cafe sells economical rice; dishes like hor fun, fried rice and laksa; and fish soup. The longest queue belonged to the cai png vendor so being Singaporean, I decided to go for that.
To my amazement, I ordered rice with, mala chicken, salted egg yolk chicken, tofu with minced pork, spicy long bean and a fried egg, all for $5.30. Whut? The dishes were hot, fresh and yummy. If I'm in Selegie/Prinsep area and I need a good cheap meal, this is it.
Simple fishball noodles with excellent fishballs. Brings new meaning to "bouncy bouncy smack smack". In the same coffeeshop, there is a good cze char stall as well!
It's one of the iconic places for supper in Singapore. Opened 24 hours daily, Meng Kitchen is the place to get your bak chor mee fix. We love it doused in vinegar together with the soup.
We also recommend the side of fish cake. Be patient and don't expect fantastic service as this place gets hectic at times.
The Roti Prata House used to be a favourite among many but standards have declined. The original plain crispy prata reminds us of eating an oily cookie. But the other pratas (egg and cheese) are still good. The mutton nasi goreng is good as well with generous chunks of mutton.
Most noticeable however would be the poor service. Opened 24 hours from Fri to Sat and 7am - 2am from Sun to Thu.
The infamous bak chor mee soup from Fengshan Market & Food Centre or more commonly known as "Bedok 85". There has been a commotion over which of the three prominent bak chor mee stalls reign supreme. We like Seng Hiang Bak Chor Mee because of the soup and the taste of the minced pork. Be prepared for a long wait for your bowls to be served to you though. Ours took 25 minutes to come!
The famous herbal mee sua from the east!
There are many variations of the herbal soupy dish. The most popular version would be the one with kidneys and livers. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of either so I opted for pork slices.
The cze char restaurant offers a generous amount of pork slices to ensure that each bite has a chomp of lean and tender pork. Just like Japanese ramen, you will slurp every drop of soup from your bowl. Overall quite shiok! Best part? Opened daily from 5pm all the way till 4am.

Such a gorgeous dish of al dente riso tied together with parmesan, topped with discs of white asparagus, slices of succulent Duroc pork, and right in the middle of it all, a soft-boiled egg that bled a gooey, glorious molten yolk. Just gold.
In Queensway Shopping Centre and choosing which stall to satisfy your laksa craving?
I prefer 328 Katong Laksa to Janggut Laksa ($4/5/6) for two reasons. Janggut's broth is less rich and milky. Also, 328's chili paste packs more punch.
However, the "Original Katong Laksa" stall offers delights such as curry chicken and chicken cutlet rice that are favourites among students, young and old, studying nearby.
Good yet really affordable roast meats!
The food at Pek Kio Food Centre is known to be affordable with most stalls pricing their dishes at $2.50 each.
Xin Heng Kee is one of those stalls that sells roasted duck, pork, chicken; steamed chicken; and char siew rice from the same kitchen at $2.50 each.
I had roasted duck rice with additional roasted chicken meat for $4.80 because why not? Though the food is good but not mind blowing or special, the affordable price is probably the reason for the long queue at lunch hour.
I can't stop munching on this huge heap of crisp sweet potato fries ($14.90++) from Curious Palette. If only I could have more of that complementing truffle aioli dip.
