With the chilly season comes the best time to tuck into a hearty tummy-warming Mala! Having had Mala at plenty of places, 日日紅 has been on my wishlist as I've seen it appear on my Google search for "Best Mala in SG"!
Prices were charged according to the type of ingredients you pick. Vegetables are charged at $1, meat at $2, and fish at $3. The lady will grab a specific amount of the ingredient you choose, depending on the pax having it. I ordered my usual must-haves of Maggi, luncheon meat, enoki mushroom, lotus root, tau kwa, broccoli and Chinese cabbage.
You'd be given a queue number upon ordering, but the waiting process was relatively fast. I tried the 微辣 version, and it did not disappoint. The taste of the dish was well balanced, as there was equal ratio of numbness to spice (some other places' Mala are just plain salty, or numb and not spicy) - it was tasty alright. My bowl came with some free ingredients such as pork slices, kelp and the flat translucent noodles, which I assume are remnants from the previous stirfry.. the serving was huge and only costed approx. $8!
It was a satisfying meal indeed.. oh and don't forget to pair it with a cup of sugarcane lemon juice!
So I did a search online for this local dish that's seemingly vanishing from many food places, and decided to give the stall here a try. I had my Thunder Tea Brown Rice ($5.50, same for white) in the evening and the soup, which was neither too strong nor tasteless, was warm. Would've loved if the rice and ingredients were hot or at least warm though.
Despite being lukewarm, the taste and quality of the dish was not compromised. After trying the soup by itself (yum!), I drenched the rice in it and began relishing every bit of it. Earlier on, I caught an angmoh doing the very same thing! So heartwarming to see them enjoying a dish which is of acquired taste among locals.. heh.
Man, how do I start? This plate of megawesome goodness is the only sauce-drenched dish I'd crave -alil too frequently maybe- for, and leaves me wanting more when it's gone too soon..
The Chap Chye is a must, double it up maybe? Had their Ngoh Hiang as well, which was still crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Make sure to say YESSS when they ask you if you'd like all 3 sauces! Missin' the whole point of popping by this place if you don't ;)
One of those dishes which has acquired tastes, the Chao Ta Bee Hoon ($10) may look deceivingly underwhelming, but it sure packed a punch - I chose this dish initially thinking that I wouldn't be able to finish it, but little did I know I'd want more of it!
Treasure lies under the bed of wokhei-covered beehoon; a mix of fried egg, shrimps, crabsticks, beansprouts and sotong - remember not to neglect the sambal limau!
Happy thanks to Burpple Beyond, which reminded me that this place has been on my Wishlist for way too long!
Pictured is their Peanut Butter & Jelly toast ($8), which placed me in a dilemma of finishing it quick or savoring it, both reasons being that it's TOTES YUMMY. It does not look the prettiest, but that sammich sure packs a punch! Crunchy on the outside as it's cornflake-crusted, and the spreads within were simply generous.
Being one of the few places in SG that serves this awesome toast combination, PBD should be proud of this masterpiece :)
You know it's sinful if it's deep fried and involves streeeetchy cheese. And for sure, you know it's delicious if you can't help wanting more. Pictured is Two Hana's unique Kimchi Mac & Cheese Bites ($9) that came in 5 pieces, which weren't bite-sized. I was afraid that it'll get jelak but the worry was futile.. these bites are definitely a must-try in here!
Two Hana also has a comfortable ambience, with powerplugs provided! A nice place to chill at for sure.
Ecstatic was I when word spread that Isaac Toast will be having its first ever outlet in Singapore! Having tasted the hearty goodness of this tasty sandwich back in Korea, I had my expectations set when I paid the outlet a visit.
I ordered the Ham and Cheese toast ($4.50, ala carte), and it sure did not disappoint. It tasted almost exactly like the one I had in its place of origin! The thick toasts were slathered with their special sauce, holding the omelette (which had corn bits), ham and oozy cheese all together in one wholesome sammich! Plus points for the convenient and pretty packaging too :)
Lunch situation at this hipster joint on a weekday! Ordered their Guac & Eggs ($10.50, pictured), which featured tangy guacamole and scrambled eggs atop multigrain toasts, w/ alfafa, pumpkin seeds and tomato slices to complete the dish.
Have always felt that one should NEVER place 'em eggs on toasts because it'll be soggy.. why would people do that?! Thankfully though.. the crusts of the toasts maintained its needed texture.
Also tried their Truffle Fries ($8), which was not disappointing unlike some other cafés'! We could smell the fragrance of the truffle the mo it arrived on our table, and man, were they generous w/ the grated parmesan! Perfect for sharing as the serving was huge :)
The halal café was chill and rustic, perfect for groups to get together, or students who need a conducive environment to meet that deadline (psst, charging ports? Check. Free WiFi? Check.).. Not to worry, The Bravery Café boasts itself for being laptop-friendly! Do check out their newly revamped menu, you'll be sooo spoilt for choice.
Wanted something savory and went ahead with one of the 2 choices (the other being chicken nuggets) they offered. Asked for the dish to be deconstructed to avoid the risk of being served waffles drenched in maple syrup.. glad I did!
The waffles were solid lah - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Just the way most people will like it, I guess (I generally prefer mine underdone).
The chicken pieces (four of 'em) were
-heads up, the health-conscious ones-
air-fried, but it was a 2:1 ratio of batter to meat.
Nonetheless, the staff (just one young lady, actually) was pleasant and was able to handle a full house all by herself! Kudos to her for that. It's a comfortable hideout to chill at, though it could do with some Wifi ;)
Patronized this 1-Star Michelin Starred restaurant on a weekday night and although there was a queue, the wait was short! There were more tourists than locals, and the seating here is a lot like HK's - do not feel too awkz about the elbow-brushing with the stranger beside you!
Ordered the Soya Sauce Chicken Noodles ($4.80); the al dente noodles, alkaline by nature, needed the super delish sauce (it's MORE than just soya sauce) to keep you having mouthfuls after mouthfuls of. The star of the dish was the chicken itself -O THE CHICKEN- which was tasty, doused in the savory-sweet sauce, and it's just.. simply the most tender chicken ever, 'nuff said. Try it to believe it!
First off, the ambience of this cafe was pure beauty - think vintage, Peter Rabbit and wax seals. Upon entry, the tunes of Lorde made the place even more intriguing.
Then came the food. My friend ordered their Pesto Linguine ($16.90, pictured) which looked a whole lot like an appetizer, ain't it? The plating was delicate, yet miserly. However, though the portion was a tad too small, it did not fail much in taste; being oily by nature, the taste of pesto was in every strand of al dente linguine (the smell whiffed through the entire cafe when it was being prepared).
Had a try of their Scrambled Eggs ($3 for add-on) as well, which did not look appealing and needed a variety of available condiments (plus point: they use Pink Salt) to make up for the lack of taste. The buttered toasts which came with the Enchanted Big Brekkie($18.90) were crispy, though the crusts were burnt.
Service was amicable, and prices are nett. It's a cosy cafe to be in, nevertheless.
When I first had this Curry Potato Pau ($2.20), I was ecstatic that the dough seemed more than the filling (just the way I like it.. oh doughlove). However as I munched my way through the pau, I realized that the delicious filling needed the pau to complement it - making it a perfectly balanced hearty pau.
Love it when eaten piping hot from the steamer, but you can also choose to takeaway the paus as a snack in the later part of the day, or as breakfast for the next. Other flavours I've tried include Purple Sweet Potato, Banana Chocolate, and Yam.
Also, don't be fooled that its colorful appearance is due to food colourings! Just Dough prides itself for using natural ingredients for their paus - making the colours au naturel.
Tried and tested, satisfied and recommended :)
