Decent Cheese Katsu! Back at @onkei.tonkatsu to try their other tonkatsu variations and was satisfied with their Cheese Rosu-Katsu Set ($19.90)! The pork fillet was quite well fried till golden brown and it was stuffed full of cheese! The meat itself may be a little dry, but it is definitely meaty. The chicken is best paired with the tonkatsu sauce, which was pretty tangy to cut the rich fat flavour from the cheese and meat fillet. They offer free refills of rice, soup and cabbage, and I liked the soup the best due to its rich meaty and umami flavours. This may not be one of the best tonkatsu I've eaten, but it's definitely decent, filling and affordable. A great lunch option for the offices nearby!

Chicken Katsu and Tempura Chicken Katsu is soft and Tempura is crispy. Not too oily. Cabbage is crunchy.

Karage and Oyster Karage is very soft. Oyster is fresh

Dinner set A 7 course dinner set, feels like an omakase but at the same time not as the serving speed of the dishes is mostly overlapping just short of serving everything at one go! 😅 But wells got it at a 1-1 deal with burpple beyond at Matsuya Dining along Beach Road! The course started out light and it get heavier towards the end. My favorites of the set got to be the Oyster which was very plump, creamy and citrusy with the ponzu sauce; followed by the Sashimi Mori, with chutoro, tai and hotate sashimi being the leading choices in the platter. The Gindara miso was also torched to perfection. The cod fish was flaky, sweet and savory. Their chawamushi is only tasty with the compliments of the Ikura otherwise, it’s like steam egg without stock. On the other hand find it a pity I didn’t get to really enjoy the Wagyu Niniku Rice. There’s a nice garlicky fragrance and aroma but the rice was a tad little too oily and the beef slices is a little overcooked to stomach after 6 courses of dishes. It seems like they do better with their raw fishes and they do seem to have a group of regulars whom will frequent them! Ambiance wise it’s like an inbetween a tradition sake house and a Japanese restaurant. The staffs were pretty friendly too!

Burpple Beyond 1-for-1 Set Meal ($144) A very small restaurant housed in Beach Centre. It was full house on a Saturday evening so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. The place has a rather casual vibe but has impeccable service. Staff is very helpful and dishes were served right on time. One after the other. They were attentive and would clear your plates once you have finished your dish. It is worth noting that the Burpple set menu was different from the ones featured in their regular menu. I was shown a photo with 5 courses and no text but in a gist this was what they were, served in order: 1.) Oyster Sashimi This consisted of 2 oysters served cut and was a pleasant surprise because it was different from regular raw oysters! The texture was a lot more chewy, less watery and was complimented well by the garnished soy sauce. 2.) Sashimi Platter (scallop, yellowtail, salmon belly, tuna belly and another white fish sashimi) Sashimi platter was lack luster in my opinion. Didn't feel particularly fresh but a nice variety of fish was presented. 3.) Prawn Tempura (fried prawn) I indicated fried prawns because it tasted more like it than tempura, lacking the crunch of tempura batter. I am not sure if it was intended to be a tempura dish, but deep fried prawns are also not common in Japanese menus 🤷🏻‍♀️ This dish was just alright. Not great. 4.) Grilled Cod with mayo and ebiko + Ikura Chuwanmushi The grilled cod was buttery and fresh. Light mayo dressing has a tangy taste to it with crunchy ebiko making it a tasty dish. Chuwanmushi was disappointing. I am a big chuwanmushi fan this was bad steamed egg for restaurant standards. Egg was tasteless and felt like it was made without special broth. Only saving grace is the fresh ikura on top. 5.) Beef with Garlic Fried Rice + Fish Miso Ginger Soup As I do not consume beef, the staff was very kind to swop it out into unagi for me. The unagi was well prepared and soft to the bite but was a really small (thin) serving. Garlic rice was delicious too. My friend who ordered beef however left most of the meat uneaten because she said it was overcooked and tough. On the other hand, the miso soup was good! It was served with fatty fish slices with bone that I don't eat, but it is my first time having miso with ginger and I was pleasantly surprised. Overall: Even though there was good service and decent food, with a wide array of dishes, I was sweating while having my food because the AC was not strong. May be because we were seated beside the drinks fridge. If you picked Unagi for the rice dish like I did, this is a very seafood-heavy course. I think it is a nice dining concept but post-taxes (with green tea) the bill came up to $143.35 and at 70 per pax I feel like you can have pretty decent Japanese food that you personally enjoy instead of being restricted by a course meal. Courses were mostly a hit or miss and the dishes I truly enjoyed were the oyster sashimi and unagi fried rice + miso soup, but you could have something similar elsewhere. Ambience: 3/10 Service: 9/10 Food: 6.5/10 Price: 4/10 (with Beyond)

5 Course Lunch Burpple beyond 1 for 1 was worth it. Sashimi was fresh and tender, portion of unagi rice was just nice. Location was easy to find, overall a great experience.

Berry Sure Waffles I wanted to order their lava cakes as I just recovered frm flu allergy like recently 🥲. I decided to get berry sure waffles ($14.80). I really like their waffles and got strong egg aftertaste. It's turned slightly soggy for waffles once it's topped with ice cream and sauce if not its quite ok.

Blackout Cake + Mango Passionfruit Sorbet Finally tried this cafe for a long time 😅 the cafe is quite famous for their chocolate dessert and waffles. I really like their dessert but they also selling mains for brunch. My sis ordered their blackout cake ($8.80) and mango passionfruit sorbet ($4.20) (+$1.50 premium). Their blackout cake is quite good but slowly turned to be a bit jelak. 🥲

Duck Alfredo ($18.50++) Egg pasta with duck, duck liver sausage grated into the dish and cream sauce. This is a sweeter type of savoury dish due to the liver sausage, and once again, quite the small portion for the dish. 😦 The duck slices however, were substantially thick and chewy which was pretty good 👍🏻

Century Egg pork Porridge 4.3nett add on century Egg +1 add on Minced Pork +2 You can barely see the pork but this entire bowl is flooded with century Egg. So you know which to add if you're going to order here It's a very good Porridge, it's pretty salty(not overly) and the meats are marinated, congee is smooth and not overly thick, while the generous ingredients(century Egg) made it very savoury. A unique dish to share! Rice noodle rolls are pretty common in most parts of Singapore, but this stall offers something unique. Their Rice Noodles Roll with Dough Stick ($4) is really pretty simple with just the usual fried dough stick wrapped with rice noodles, but actually really delicious! The contrast in textures between the silky smooth but chewy rice noodles and the crispy airy dough within was really much appreciated! The simple soya sauce gave this dish a satisfying savoury kick. Definitely a dish recommended to share!

Black Iberico Pork Congee A decent bowl of congee that's elevated by the top-notch meat slices.

Beef Short Rib The smoked angus short rib was incredibly delicious. The meat effortless tore off from the bone and it was tender with a nice smokiness to it. Absolutely flavourful.

Platter For 1 ($29), Pork Ribs ($30), Poutine ($12) Brisket was not bad and pretty flavourful, but the lean parts was bordering on tough. Pulled pork was not juicy, kinda dry if not for the sauce on it; pork ribs / chicken wings / brioche bun /sauces were decent but nothing special. Cornbread was a bit coarse and dry at some parts, a bit more moist at others. The honey butter was nice! Coleslaw was refreshing. The poutine was very nice though, sweet potato fries were crisp and naturally sweet, the beef on it was juicy and yummy! Sauce on the poutine was flavourful too. Overall, sorry to say that the stuff worth ordering are probably the brisket, and the poutine. Wouldn’t return, there are better western BBQ establishments around.

Rum & Rasins Whoever baked this sure wasn't light handed with their dose of rum. Think this one of their strongest flavoured bakes. As usual good fluffy chiffon, not as sweet ganache. My go-to bakery for all birthday.

HOJICHA YUZU (limited time) Had their limited time hojicha yuzu cake. Was glad that I ordered this. Cake overall wasn't that sweet (as per their usual less sweet), hojicha was very gao, rich and earthy but together with their slightly sweet n tangy yuzu everything came off perfectly amicable.

Lychee Martini @$60 The Lychee Martini Cake is one of the more popular cakes here at Bloomsbury Baker The alcoholic taste was distinct and not overpowering. Cake was adequately moist within as well, texture was soft and the cream within tasted good and goes so well with the Lychee and the Martini.

Nah To Sheng Mian 🍽 Sheng Mian: this item is always a hit or miss and it is always hard to judge how it will be without any menu photos or actual photos for reference. In this case it was a total miss for me. The shengmian noodles were damn laohong and also not the crispy thin kind that I was looking for that becomes silky smooth when in the wet gravy (based on my memories the best shengmian I have ever eaten, and very unexpectedly so, was at the makansutra bay at Esplanade where there was this roast duck stall selling duck meat shengmian for $14+. At that time I was commenting how absurd the price was, but the noodles blew my mind and I still remember fondly till today 6 years later. Not sure whether this stall is still at makansutra bay / moved away / closed down haha.)

Eefu Noodle Was Slightly Too Sweeeet 🍽stewed Ee fu noodle: I have never ordered ee fu noodle at tze Char places before! This dish to me is only meant to be eaten at wedding receptions haha. We thought this dish was slightly tooo sweet though too much sweet soya sauce added! Comes with prawns and shimeiji mushrooms

Japanese buffet Good quality food items, served with small portions, yet delightful. Works well for a buffet, which allows us to try out many different dishes. Check out this complimentary mentaiko scallop. Super good!

Thick-cut Sashimi & Good Service ($56.90++ per pax) Highlights: Thick-cut Sashimi, Mentaiko Scallop, Wagyu Beef Salmon sashimi was good! I didn't enjoy the yellowtail sashimi though. Other cooked items are quite ordinary. If you need veg, go for the okonomiyaki! Cabbage seems healthier than the ingredients in their salad - (iceberg?) lettuce, corn, cherry tomato, cucumber. Amazing Japanese Buffet My favourite Japanese buffet as they serve quality food. Sashimi is thick and fresh, and decent selection. Love their teapot soup and Ikura chawanmushi as well. Omizu lunch buffet! Tried the hotpot they have, with the spicy miso and white nabe soup. I found the soup base quite tasty. The ingredients come in really small portions so try to order more ingredients at one time. Do try their mochi for dessert too. But overall for the price per pax, very value for money and would come back again!

Omizu buffet lunch First time at this outlet after the outlet at Katong closed down. My favourite sushi is the aburi sushi! Also they have good sushi rolls. Place was packed so be prepared to wait for your food, some of the food we ordered actually didn’t make it. But overall for the price per pax, very value for money and would come back again!

Quality dishes in a buffet setting! If you love your Japanese food, this is one buffet restaurant you don't want to miss out on. The buffet itself is priced at $50++, and there were many options in the menu such as sashimi, grilled dishes, tempura, side dishes and udon/soba meal dishes. The quality of the food items were actually pretty impressive! The sashimi slices were all fresh and the cooked dishes were all done well. Favourites got to be their salmon sashimi, as they were so rich and buttery 😍 Their grilled dishes were done well too, especially the grilled saba and salmon slices. They were smokey and the sweet fresh flavours of the meat really shines here! Can't wait to be back!

ala carte buffet free flow of freshness for sashimi lovers. bonus: leave some space for two dishes - mixed zosui (japanese porridge) and sake-chazuke (rice with green tea). Recommend to have it at the end since they are carbs.
