Japanese Zen With Pearl ($4.50) Got the Japanese Zen (base price $4.20), and added pearl (additional $0.30 for toppings). Used the Beyond 1-for-1 deal here so the drink was very reasonably priced. It is essentially an average Matcha Latte with a fancy name - the matcha taste was average, drink was a bit too sweet for my tastes (they didn’t ask me for sugar levels so I assume you can’t pick it), there wasn’t a lot of pearl in the drink either - a pity because the pearls are quite nice. For the price after the 1-for-1 deal, I think it’s pretty alright. May drop by the store if I am around the area and the store is still on Burpple Beyond, but probably wouldn’t specifically make a trip here for the BBT. The paper cups are pretty though. :D

Cheap Bubble Tea You Will Love! This may seem like a very unassuming shop, but be prepared to be surprised by their unique range of bubble tea flavours. The Brown Sugar Earl Grey Milk Tea ($2.90) was not too heavy and had a hint of Earl Grey, and the pearls were chewy. The Wintermelon with Zesty Lemon ($2.90) is really unique, and very refreshing! #burpplebeyond is available here as well so that makes your drinks even cheaper 😍

The deshelled tiger prawns had a bouncu juicy crunch, with natural sweet savoury flavour. The crisp rocket leaves / arugula had vegetal bitter herbal sweet flavour. So good. . The breakfast items were delicious too. There's creamy soft scrambled eggs with bright eggy sweet savour flavour, and juicy grilled tomato with vegetal sweet notes. . The crisp potato hashbrown was tasty with starchy salty savoury flavour, and the bouncy juicy grilled button mushrooms held vegetal earthy salty savoury notes. . Very Wide Choice Of Vegetarian Dishes We are spoilt for choice when it comes to where to eat along Tanjong Katong Road. It is why I've never stepped into this popular vegetarian place even though I have walked past it many times. Well, until tonight that is. With Punggol Nasi Lemak closed, I decided to take the plunge and try something meatless. Shocking, I know 😜 So a bowl of "Monkey Head Mushroom Mee Sua" ($7.80) and "Burdock Mushroom Rolls" ($6.80) were what I ended up having for my late dinner. The soup was the herbal sort and the fine strands of soft noodles came with an abundance of soya beancurd in various forms, as well as juicy mushrooms of the Monkey Head and shiitake variety. As for the rolls, I liked how crispy the sheets of beancurd skin wrapping them were, and thought the minced up burdock and mushroom filling was tasty too. Overall, both items were really decent; and trust me, that's high praise coming from an ardent meat-lover. I'd say they're good enough for me to consider returning to try the other vegetarian items from the extensive menu. Speaking of which, my mind was pretty boggled as I flipped through pages listing everything from tom yum noodles to mutton curry, laksa to "ma la" stews, and luncheon meat to pizzas.

Squid ink pasta 27.5+svc A well-executed squid ink pasta, the squid was cut into too small pieces to enjoy properly tho. Taste was quintessential, not the seafood base type that's very good as well. It's quite oily though

Focaccia and balsamic aubergine olive oil(complimentary) The focaccia was average but the ingenuity comes from the aubergines. It's baked with balsamic and has all the sour notes yet comes with a fuller body. I've never been a fan of balsamic vinegar+ olive oil cos I feel the dip lacks body but boy was I blown away by this. Certainly an upgrade over tradition, and that's something that's incredibly rare Must try in my eyes, I'm very biased

Insanely Good Squid Ink Pasta Worth Having A Black Smile For! ($27.50+) Rediscovered an Italian restaurant that had wow-ed me many, many years ago, thanks to the @ourgrandfatherstory video I co-hosted with @cheahwenqi. When the Producer @jialinng mentioned that @portaportaitalianrestaurant was one of the places we would be filming at, the name rang a bell in my head. During the shoot, we got to meet Chef-owner Rosie and I recognised her at once from my visit to Porta Porta when it was at its first location, directly across from Changi Prison. After stuffing my face on a few of her restaurant’s specialities on camera, I vowed to return for a proper meal. So last Sunday, that was where I took my parents for dinner. As usual, I decided to order us a few dishes to share, so we could try a variety. One of these was the “Tagliatelle Al Nero Di Seppie” which had me and my mum floored with its overwhelming tastiness. Memories of when I last ate this dish of squid ink pasta suddenly flooded back - it was during the early days of the restaurant’s opening and I recalled meeting Rosie‘s now late Italian husband who had come over to chat during our meal. If time has had any bearing on this dish, it’s only for the better because honestly, words fail to describe how helluva spectacular it currently is. I loved the perfect al dente-ness of those eggy ribbons of tagliatelle, and the midnight-black sauce was unbelievably umami. Chef Rosie’s unconventional addition of chilli for spiciness only propelled the pasta to stratospheric deliciousness. Warning: Eating this leaves you with black lips and teeth. There is no way to avoid that. But trust me, it is worth the weird looks you’ll get when you grin in supreme satisfaction.

Hamburger steak, 160g ($16.80) Was deciding between the tonkatsu and this but the waitress recommended the latter as their specialty here. Smothered in thick gravy, the minced beef patty was meaty and juicy without being overly salty. The roasted potatoes served as a good side with a very crisp surface and centers that added creaminess, together with the runny yolk! 😋 Am personally not much of a steak person, but I enjoyed this ground beef rendition 👍🏻 [8.5/10]
