For something more exciting, I also found their 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻 ($24.90) tastefully executed with restrain, even if truffle is generally a worn-out trend. You get that earthy perfume but at a moderated dosage just to enliven the broth — not overwhelming but with enough headiness to accentuate that potent base.

When @kanadaya.sg first landed in SG, their standing as No. 1 Ramen in London drew slews of people to queue for their iconic 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘂 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻 ($17.90). You can't go wrong with their robust broth — comfortingly creamy and brimming with porky umami, it's definitely one of the better ones around.
An enjoyable ensemble of toppings and tender aburi chashu were just icing on the cake. As someone who thought they weren't worth the hype when they first arrived, I've actually been pleasantly surprised on all subsequent visits — a pretty solid tonkotsu option nowadays.

The Heartbleed Highball ($18) was a simpler concoction in contrast, containing Mezcal, Vodka, Lychee Syrup, Soda Water, ith its strong smoky mezcal base was lightly coloured by a fizz and lychee sweetness. Not as smooth as a classic highball, but quite apt considering our visit was on Halloween night.

Quirky creativity aside, Section D does have a fleshed out regular menu and each of them held a story. A very endearing one was The Proposal ($16), Bourbon, Peat, Orange, Tonic — Dannon’s actual proposal drink to Jamie. Deathly strong with a touch of smouldering smoke and sweetness. If that’s what true love tastes like, sign me up.

My favourite of the night was the Bottled Up ($16) — Rojak Gin, Vermouth, Plum, Brown Sugar, Coconut. A drink casually made to be delivered to friend in bottle form during lockdown. Intoxicatingly fagrant an savoury notes from the rojak gin and coconut weaved in and out of the palate, whilst the vibrancy of plum dazzled throughout.
An enchanting ensemble exploding with local inspiration, it was splendidly complex but not excessive. Always heart-warming to see our local flavours given an innovative spin.

the first taste of Section D was the welcome drink of homebrewed gula melaka stout — a pleasant dose of gula melaka sweetness that made you feel at home, along with the comforting lo-fi beats playlist. A touch of tartness, a touch of deepness, just the right combination.

Born early this year, Section D is barely out of infancy but already has its feet firm on the ground. Trust you're in good hands, as the drinks are mixed by an editor of a lifestyle publication, who is deeply knowledgeable about alcohol.
Bespoke drinks are a great litmus test for a bartender’s feel for flavours. So I swiftly requested a bespoke when I spotted Empirical’s Fuck Trump and His Stupid Fucking Wall on their shelves. And I gotta say, this beautifully named The Mexicans Are Coming ($20) passed with flying colours.
Unapologetically Mexican with the Habanero-tinged base spirit mixed with Mezcal, but jazzed up with layers of sweetness from the grapefruit and honey to give some balance. A smart mix of flavours with a sound idea behind it.

Although Yan Ji is widely raved for their seafood soup, I tasted nothing but disappointment. Saltier than a boomer in a CPF building and packed with less nuance than a YP hitting on a XMM. You know what else is salty and tactless? @indulgentism, after foolishly paying $11 for their seafood soup. 🤡
-
Only partially filled but costing $11 — surely that's confidence in their quality. Alas other than the decent seafood and luscious meatballs, it had few redeeming qualities. This was my second visit and it went from underwhelming to a standard even food court Japanese miso soups daren't dream of.
-
On the bright side, this was a very heartwarming bowl of soup — because it made me realize whilst I'm trash I would never be this level of hot garbage. Much needed comfort during these times. 🥰🙌🏻

The bake photos of fellow burppler @littlebignoms on Instagram is always mouthwatering. Was intrigued enough to pop by @lemuelchocolate for her 𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 ($5)
-
Slightly more cake-like in texture, it had a nice moist density to it whilst packed to the brim with chocolate intensity. Quite honestly, I think TBB isn't worth its hassle and this was a pretty good alternative, with a quirky flavour spin. Granted I've only had TBB and my own for reference.
-
Cinnamon crumble added a nice fragrant perfume and some textural layering with its cronch. That glistening milk chocolate truffle then gave some levity to this rich bake with a spirited aramel-tinged sweetness. Of course it can get a bit cloying as with most blackout brownies but these are for unrestrained indulgence. Waistline be damned.

Maybe not one of the best around, but their burnt cheesecake ($6) is an insane bang for your buck. Not to say it’s bad, since I found it one of the better ones I had. A nice controlled sweetness underscored by a gorgeously creamy mouthfeel — denser but not cakey at all.

There are days when you just crave for the simple things in life. @bakerybrera's 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁 ($3.50) is a nice companion for those lazy mornings snuggled in bed with a good book.
-
Maybe not crazy crispy or buttery but it's a charmingly safe choice that wasn't over-indulgent when you just want simplicity. Delightful treat with a gentle buttery fragrance and light flaky crust. Slightly doughy but fluffy enough to remind you of the comfy bed covers you're lying on.
These 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 ($10/box of 8) from @lecafe_sg have been extremely popular in the past months, and it's not hard to see why.
-
That beancurd was consistently bouncy and silky — just look at that perfect gloss. Tart was buttery and crumbled excitedly with a light bite. Really nice contrast and mixture of textures. 😩

A marriage of lao ban and egg tart, my childhood favourites. All I get are wholesome old-school vibes seeing them get married beautifully.
