The specialty of the bartender at Woobar - W Sentosa is this take on the Old Fashioned. The glass is filled with candy floss which melts when the shot is poured in, adding a little sweetness to the concoction.

With the weather wet and rainy at the moment and encouraged here in Burpple, I finally am able to sit down with a large bowl of 328 Katong Laksa ($7.50) Meeting a craving for schoolboy district childhood nostalgia among rain slick roads and sidewalks.
It's really the broth that makes the whole dish. The noodles just give it texture and serves as a medium to transfer delicious from bowl to mouth. The strips of fishcake mixed in among the noodles provide more bite as a contrast while the prawns are tasty meat bundles infusioned with broth and lovely to chew. But for me personally, it's the cockles that act as like surprises if explosive flavor that gels the dish together. I understand though if that is not for everyone.
All that aside, I am disappointed with the little chili packet they hand out to each bowl. Personally I could have gone for two just to give the disk more kick overall.
On Halloween I was presented with a trick of the eyes and a treat for my stomach.
Taking a break from wandering around Clarke Quay amidst the colourful costumers I sat down at Liang Court for a large Buta Don ($15?). The trick of the eyes is how compact the bowl looked when presented but behind the many pieces of pork flown in from Japan, was a deep fluffy white bed of short grain rice. And finally the light seasoning and sauce was frightening at how well it brought all the elements together.
The shop prides themselves on remaining authentic especially with their ingredients, but I as I left I couldn't help but have a slight sense of dread over them being able to maintain their reasonable pricing in the shadow of the great food that can already be found in our hallowed city.
Izy does a good lunch set which includes appetisers and desserts, well suited for the business crowd. The $30++ Steak Don was melt-in-your-mouth tender and well seasoned, with a perfectly runny onsen egg. We finished off with a strawberry chilli sorbet with almond flakes and sweet cream, which was refreshing and light! The chili was very subtle and left a slight tingle on your tongue. The lunch set was a good sized, not too heavy to go back to work on. We sat at the bar and was impressed by exceptionally attentive service staff, not something you see often in Singapore. Thumbs up Izy!
Sometimes I just need to crank out a quick lunch before diving back into work and just don't want to think too much about what to eat - the layman's lament.
For that I head nearby for a plate of this Sambal Fried Rice ($5). The characteristic that I like the most here is that the rice really has the texture of being fried: the grains are hard yet still some moisture inside, it's served piping hot with the steam inside rising out as you stir, the vegetables add crunch and each spoon has the mouthfeel of spiciness from the sambal. Just a bite and not overpowering.
All in all its a nice, quick mid-day pick-me-up before heading back into the grind.
That's quite the sit up. #food #singapore #seafood #crab
