Nonya Ngoh Hiang Have heard quite a bit of talk about Sugar’s Homemade — this rather obscure Nonya stall is hidden within Tin Yeang Restaurant beside Dunman Food Centre; also the same coffee shop where Mr & Mrs Moghan’s Prata is located.
Specialising in Popiah, Kueh Pie Tee and Ngoh Hiang, they also retail their Popiah in “party sets” where one will order the quantity of Popiah skins they require, and can even opt for additional portion of prawns, sweet sauce and chili for their order to assemble their own Popiah at home. Was looking forward to try their Popiah but understandably they were out of Popiah when I made my visit at around 7:30pm on a Friday night (wasn’t actually intending to make a dedicate visit; more like just looking for something in the area to munch on as a light dinner); and that is how I ended up with their Nonya Ngoh Hiang which were fried fresh upon order. Apart from being a little greasy, these were absolutely delicious — crisp fried beancurd skin aside, the Nonya Ngoh Hiang as well-packed; firm on the inside with a meaty bite, but yet doesn’t carry an overwhelming hint of meatiness. The fillings also held itself well within; bits of chestnut also included to provide a crunch for a contrast of textures. What I absolutely loved was dipping these golden brown pockets of minced meat and chestnut into the chili provided on the side; the piquant spiciness takes away much of the greasiness, all that with the aroma of fresh, raw chili padi hitting the taste buds even for those with a moderate tolerance to spiciness. Speak about homemade goodness here.
With food that comes from the heart and made with skill; this is pretty much what homemade fare at its very best. Pretty excited to make my subsequent trip to give their Popiah a try; pretty sure that would be pretty satisfying given how the Nonya Ngoh Hiang turn out to be — here’s to my next visit here some day!
