You really must try Shiokoji Tonkatsu Keisuke at Paya Lebar Square. The batter is super crispy without feeling greasy and the meat is tender. Even the egg is done just right! Really enjoyed my meal here.

Tastes exactly the same after all these years. Noodles has a nice texture and Yong Tau Hoo is tasty.

A lot of premium ingredients featured, and not just for the sake of it but  in beautiful dishes that tasted so good.
.
I particularly liked the Baked Caramelised Black Cod Fillet, which was simply melt in the mouth, and the Chilled Premium Birds Nest which I finished down to the last drop. The ginger pieces are meant to be eaten, and gives the dessert a different dimension if you do so.

Here's what we tried:
1⃣Traditional house-made Cured Trout Yu Sheng
2⃣ Double-Boiled Seafood Treasure with Abalone and Morel Mushrooms
3⃣ Baked Caramelised Black Cod Fillet and Miso Glaze
4⃣ Chef Andrew's 12 Treasures Claypot (Pen Cai) with Truffle
5⃣ Chilled Premium Bird's Nest with Ginseng Red Dates and Wolfberries
6⃣ Coconut Malibu Pineapple Tart / Light Foie Gras Pineapple Tart

Various Set Lunches / Dinners start from $68++ per pax.
.
And if you don't feel like eating anything, how about a CNY drink? Bai Shu meaning white rat, is a variation of the Bloody Mary and packs a hidden punch with a translucent yuzu-spiced tomato juice. Hong Shu in contrast means red rat and is a savoury mocktail with Citrus notes from non-alcoholic Seedlip Spice and yuzu juice give it a natural edge, while a dash of rosemary syrup provides herbal aroma. As a tongue-in-cheek nod to the celebrated rodent, the concoction is topped with a torched slice of cheese to seal in its flavours.

I usually go for mutton if the place is good. Mutton here is tender and tasty but the curry is too oily. Rice also not fragrant.

Hamachi (Japanese amberjack/yellowtail) is used. This is more of a savory Yu Sheng, which I enjoyed. The addition of spring onions and even lemongrass seems odd, but actually works really well together with the savoury soya sauce. I found myself going back for seconds, and had to restrain myself from getting thirds.
.
This Shunde Yu Sheng is available all year round and not just during CNY. Just give 3 day's notice. As you can see, it's a very "refined" version, no tossing required! If you still want to partake in the act of tossing the yu sheng, there are other yu shengs to choose from.

Other dishes sampled during CNY media tasting:

2⃣Roasted "Silver Hill" Irish Duck (signature dish which is also on CNY menu)
3⃣Chicken Soup with Morel Mushroom and Peach Gum (new dish)
4⃣Wok-fried Prawn Ball with Traditional "Nanyang" Style (new dish)
5⃣Steamed Marble Goby "Fisherman Stye" (CNY dish)
6⃣Signature Famous Treasure "Pen Cai" (CNY dish)

The rice bowls despite looking small at first are chock a block, and you can even add prawns or mentaiko sauce. Great for people like me who like to overdose on mentaiko!

There are free hard-boiled eggs on the size, you can have as much as you like!

I haven’t eaten this in a couple of years because it’s always so difficult to find seats.
.
Still like the flavour of the chicken but found it a tad salty this time round. Skin was nicely crisp though without feeling greasy. Fries also. Unlike KFC, I prefer the original version here coz the spicy version is too spicy. And the hot gravy is nice and quite unique.

Killed many birds with 1 stone.
1️⃣Train ride to Botanic Gardens to satisfy train mad child
2️⃣Cafe time to satisfy Instagram mad wife and caffeine addicted husband
3️⃣New finds at Cluny Court to fill up our pantry
4️⃣Outdoor time to soak up nature and sunshine. Drizzled for a bit so it was really lovely and cool.

Seems that people have started to go back to craving foods we all grew up with. Not necessary to spend exorbitantly to rake in the likes. Still, we can’t run away from the allure of fast food. Luckily one of my home cooked meals made the cut.

If there’s one thing I need to do more in 2020, that’s to expand and improve upon my culinary skills!

Here’s to an even better 2020 and decade ahead! Happy New Year everyone!

I used to think Yakun is my favourite, but this year the staff at my favourite Wang outlet have brewed it just right to my liking so I’ve been visiting nearly everyday. This outlet at Changi Airport is very pretty, which we chanced upon last week. This isn’t the one that I usually visit though.

Also one of my favourite dishes here. There is just one problem, the spoon isn’t big enough and my noodles keep slipping off!
