It does seem like Thai-style fried bananas are starting to get a little more common around the island — whilst the item is one that is unheard of just a number of years ago, the existence of Golden Banana that was previously located in the Thai Supermarket during its time at Golden Mile Complex (Golden Banana is now located In Citygate) had pretty much popularised the Thai snack locally. Since then, there are other brands that had served up the same — a prominent one being Talad Thai Banana which operates several locations islandwide, including one within the relocated Thai Supermarket at Aperia Mall. Had come across the existence of Siam Munchies one day whilst scrolling through social media — these folks are an independent stall that is situated within Albert Centre Food Centre. Located along the opposite row as one would find another Thai food stall named What Da Duck that serves up Thai Duck Noodles, Siam Munchies has quite a prominent stall front that is well-lit by bright lights with an equally eye-grabbing yellow signage. The stall of focused on serving up fried Thai snacks — this would include Fried Banana, Fried Sweet Potato and Fried Taro that are all displayed behind the counter in a single wicker basket.
Siam Munchies serve up their fried Thai snacks in two portion sizes; a Small bag at $4 that comes with six (6) pieces of fried snacks, or a Large bag that is priced at $5 with eight (8) pieces of fried snacks. Patrons can get to choose any combination of fried banana, fried sweet potato and fried taro pieces as long as they are still available; since we dropped by Siam Munchies in the evening, we went with going for a mix of everything though we did leave it to the folks behind the stall to decide how many pieces of each he would like to give — stock of the Fried Sweet Potato and Fried Taro were rather limited by the time we dropped by. Amongst the three variations of fried Thai snacks that they have to offer, the Fried Banana was our clear favourite. What we really liked about all of the fried Thai snacks here was the batter; the batter is thick enough to provide a crunch — all that whilst speckled with sesame seeds that further enhances both the texture and the aroma of the fried fritters here. While the Fried Taro and Fried Sweet Potato had a firmer bite considering how they are root vegetables, the Fried Banana came with smooth and creamy fruit that is close to that of caramelisation — also naturally sweet and just got us going for more. Whilst we hadn’t really tried the Thai-style Fried Banana from both Golden Banana and Talad Thai Banana, we do think that Siam Munchies does serve up quite delicious Thai-style Fried Banana that is certainly worth checking out if one is feeling peckish whilst being around the area — definitely somewhere that we do see ourselves grabbing a small bag of Fried Bananas to munch on the next time we are here!
