After exploring Shuri Castle, still under restoration since the tragic fire years ago, I visited their quaint tea house right in front of the entrance. From the outside, it may not look like much, but stepping in, the cool breeze from the air conditioning was an instant relief from the scorching heat. The interior had a calming mix of traditional tatami mats and regular tables, creating a nice zen atmosphere for a tea break.

I ordered the Ryukyu Kingdom Tea Set, which included four traditional confectionaries and a cup of Jasmine Tea (your choice of iced or hot). Each treat had its own unique history, but I'll spare the deep dive (you can check the last two picture for that). What matters is that these sweets were delicious, especially the Toganzuke, which was super sweet and incredibly refreshing.

Hanaboru: The largest confection, shaped like a knot, had a soft and crumbly texture with a mild sweetness. It was like biting into soft cookie dough.

Kunpen: Shaped like a quarter-circle, it was filled with a sesame paste that had a nutty, almost peanut butter-like taste. Be careful, it's quite heaty if you eat too much.

Chinsuko: The longest one, with a melt-in-the-mouth cookie texture. It had a slightly stronger sweetness and more crunch than Hanaboru.

Toganzuke (Winter Melon Pickle): My favourite, though the smallest and simplest looking one. It was super sweet and incredibly cooling, almost like biting into sugar with a refreshingly cool aftertaste. It's the best sweet for this heat, but beware of the sugar overload!

This tea set was the perfect break from the heat and a delicious glimpse into the sweets of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
