Milo Crepe Cake Was going around Sim Lim Square and thought we had came across a F&B establishment in the second level of the shopping gallery amidst the computer servicing shops that was quite an unfamiliar sight to say the least. Located slightly further away from the main stretch of dining establishments in the building, the store does seem rather non-descript with a set-up that is rather haphazard to say the least. Turns out, the shop space is operated by both 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle and a Nanyang Straits Cafe; the latter being not open during the day of our visit. This is not 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle’s first location around the island; their very first location is actually a hole-in-the-wall space that is located at Blk 260 Ang Mo Kio Street 21 — their offerings there includes waffles and a line-up of bubble teas. For their location at Sim Lim Square, there are dine-in seats situated outside the shop space; the items offered on the menu by 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle has also expanded from the waffles and selection of bubble tea that is served at Ang Mo Kio, and includes a small variety of ice-cream flavours and sliced crepe cakes — both of which being stocked in their respective display chillers with the ice-cream being kept in a display chiller beside the counter, while the sliced crepe cake is kept in a display cabinet right across from the counter.
We spoke to the folks running the space at Sim Lim Square and found out that their sliced crepe cakes are actually items that they have made in-house. During our visit, 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle was serving up five (5) different flavours of their Mille Crepes; these would include the Milo Crepe Cake, Oreo Crepe Cake, Lychee Rose Crepe Cake, Thai Milk Tea Crepe Cake and the Thai Green Milk Tea Crepe Cake. We found ourselves being drawn towards the Milo Crepe Cake — perhaps considering how the item does seem to come with a fusion of local elements at play. It is noted that the Milo Crepe Cake does come with a molten Milo filling somewhere in the middle. One thing to note about the Crepe Cake served at 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle is how the crepes are done with a slightly more thicker consistency when compared to those served at more “refined” establishments per se; not as intricate and delicate as that of the more expensive variants by other establishments out there but probably essential to keep the structural integrity of the cake intact as one slices down into the cake. There is sufficient Milo-infused pastry cream that alternate with each layer of crepe; the Milo-infused pastry cream carrying just a very light tinge of malty and chocolate-y flavours at the back of the tongue. Even with the molten Milo filling in the middle of the cake, the sweetness of the Milo Crepe Cake felt rather well-managed; something which would most certainly do well for those whom prefer their desserts to be less sweet in general.
We quite liked how 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle does offer their Belgian Waffles in half portions — the Half Belgian Waffle being one that would better appeal to single diners as compared to the whole portion. For our order of the Half Belgian Waffle, we went with the Black Sesame Ice-Cream; it is also noted that the Half Belgian Waffle also came with a chocolate drizzle as well. We would say that the Half Belgian Waffle at 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle is a well-made one, being crisp, airy and light while carrying a waft of buttermilk fragrance on its own. The Black Sesame Gelato comes with consistently smooth and creamy texture, and exudes of a light and lingering hint of roast-y aroma from the black sesame without being noticeably gritty in its texture. Despite its relatively haphazard set-up, 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle does seem to be an interesting addition to Sim Lim Square as an option one can hit for an after-meal sweet treat — its waffles being a safe bet and a crowd-pleaser, while their Crepe Cakes being items that segregates them from most other establishments around; not an item that most places would like to commit themselves to due to the work involved. With the prices of the Crepe Cakes at $4.80, while the Belgian Waffles being listed at $3.80 and $5.80 as-is for the half and whole portions respectively, 38.Bubble Tea.Waffle is a decent spot to consider settling for dessert after having that bowl of salted egg chicken rice bowl from whichever establishment one prefers to have from there — somewhere that one can consider visiting if in the area.
