Humbled Noodles
Undoubtedly a hit for me, huge fan of mushrooms and truffle. It is an immense sense of satisfaction to be able to dive into a mountain of mushrooms that delivers satisfying bouts of truffle aroma as you savour it. On top of the all dente noodles, the woodear and nai bai/milk cabbage lend a good crunch to the dish.
The big kway teow used to whip up the dish was a delight as the chef managed to stir fry it without cutting it up into pieces. However, more wok hey could have made the dish a more memorable one. The popular grilled pork collar was a let down too as it was chewy and overcooked.
Pretty decent bowl of beef noodles at hawker center. The Uncle was really generous with the serving of beef slices. Looks were truly deceiving. Though the beef slices looked dry and hence a lil uninviting, they were the complete opposite when eaten. Thick, tender slices yum. The dark sauce used to bring the whole dish together was not the usual savoury type. Its taste resembled that of teriyaki sauce.
For the price of $3, you can get a decent serving of al dente meepok with three handmade fishballs. The chilli has quite a kick to it so do ask for less chilli if you happen to have a low tolerance for spiciness (I sincerely hope you donāt cos chilli is life). Top up another $1.50 for handmade fishcake which has a nice bite to it:)
Just had to get the upsized version to make all the queuing worthwhile. They were really generous on the char siew slices, braised mushrooms and ping pong sized wanton. Oh ya for the fried wanton at the side, please note that they are just wanton skins with no meat filling. Haha it took me some time to get over it because I felt cheated for thinking that they were fried wanton (FYI I am a huge fan of fried wanton).
All these aside, I just had this humongous love for their noodles! It was SOOO springy, totally deserving all my thumbs and big toes up! For those of you who prefer softer noodles, this might not get into your good books. But itās definitely getting into mine:)
Part 1 of our Mala spree night!
Really one of the best MLXG I have ever had. Loved how dry they stir fried it in order to have all the ingredients soak up the mala gravy. The gravy was just so ā¤ļø. $15.50 was definitely not unreasonable, considering that there were about 8veg, 1 meat and noodles! The popular potato noodle soup was the bomb! The soup was not spicy at all. In fact, it was overflowing with umami flavour and the perfectly cooked, smooth potato noodles just made the experience even more mind blowing! Not forgetting to mention how generous they were with the ingredients (kelp, minced pork, quail egg etc) in the broth too!
Had been eyeing this place in the longest as the two storey coffee house was always so crowded and the whiff caught while passing by was always so mouthwatering. So Glad that we gave it a try because it was totally worth it! Definitely returning to try other noodle options like Tan Tan mian!
Bought a plate of wanton mee while waiting for our order of prata. Though the slices of char siew were dry, the chilli sauce used was really enjoyable with a kick. It has been really challenging to find wanton mee with good chilli sauce recently, hence finding this was a delightful surprise:) The noodles were springy too! At a price of $3, the serving was really generous.
Not too sure if this stall is still there though, now that Mr and Mrs Moghan Prata stall has relocatedš
Feasting on a Taiwanese style pork chop with handmade ban mian noodles. Unlike the usual taste of pork chop, this masterpiece is more on the sweet side. Well not sweet sweet, more of umami kind of sweet:) The batter is not thick at all and it has a great, addictive crunch to it. The Chef is really good at whenever he is serving! Love the soy sauce that is drizzled over the noodles. As usual, it is full of homeliness with a taste that I canāt really pinpoint any specific seasoning ingredient to. It just doesnāt taste like the usual pork chop noodles served at banmian stall or Chinese noodles stall! Do try it to immerse yourself in that 家š”ēę觚
One of the stalls that warrants a visit every time you visit Ghim Moh because of its ability to maintain its standard and also, the taste of traditional HK noodles. For $3, you get to choose spinach noodles and get thick slices of tender chicken. While waiting in the queue, you can get to witness how the Uncle skilfully cooks his very springy noodles in a huge strainer. Even if there are few balls of spinach noodles and normal noodles on the strainer, he never fails to keep the different coloured noodles apart. With a light hit on the strainer, he can effortlessly send each bundle of beautifully cooked noodles onto the serving plate. Definitely witnessing the works of an experienced Chef, probably retired from a major restaurant kitchen.
However this visit revealed how decades of work had taken a toll on him. Frozen shoulder seemed to have affected his dorminant hand as he could no longer raise his right hand above chest. But somehow, he still managed to deliver his springy noodles. Then it dawned on me that this business might be seeing its last soon, if there is no one to take over:(
Hopefully many will come to try it soon before that time comes. Definitely left the visit with a heavier heart.
Correction: This stall is located at Ghim Moh Food Center, not Holland.
Didn't have any impressionable experience with this kway teow previously as it has been a long standing stall holder in the food center for years. Decided to give it another try after its recent attainment of Michelin Award. Regrettably, it's still as underwhelming as I could recall, with the lack of adequate dark black sauce and wok hey aroma:( The price tag of $8 for three normal sized prawns and few sotong rings was not very justifiable as well.
Finally the chance to try this ytf near my workplace! Chose 11 decently sized ingredients, 2 rolls of chee cheong fun ($0.70 each) and meat sauce ($2). It tasted awesome with all the crunch and savoury meaty sauce over the soft chee cheong fun, but definitely an over order for one person. Actually queued for 1 hour to get to choose the ingredient and another 1/2 hour to get the food during lunch peak hour. Hence, the verdict is to go again during off peak hours to get a less-rushed meal, since it is really not bad:)
Always a joy to be able to locate old school deli. The owners of this stall are related to the family selling Chai Chee Bak Chor Mee @ Bedok Blk 216 Hawker center: they are cousins. However, my family found the serving size at eunos branch more generous and the taste of the soup more fragrant and porkier. Instead of a tablespoon of minced meat given by most hawkers, the aunty gave a whole ladle of it which somehow made up for the lack of meatballsš
And all thanks to the sole fish used in making the pork broth and the dumpling fillings, we couldn't stop ourselves from ordering 2 more bowls of dumplings and also, drinking the soup till its last drop.
