Admittedly I haven’t tried many schnitzels, but this might be the best I’ve had – an exuberantly crunchy crust encases a thin sheet of tenderized veal that’s just packed with a robust meatiness. The side salad of potato and cucumber swimming in a creamy mustard sauce was absolutely beautiful and served to balance out the richness of the cutlet as well.

Germany’s answer to pasta is spätzle – short twists of egg noodles. In a Käsespätzle, the pasta is covered in oodles of stretchy cheese and brown onion. You might think the taste would be one-dimensional, but its rich savouriness was highly addictive and worthy of repeated visits by my fork.
