I love pig trotter jelly, but I have not seen or tried shark jelly before! The cold pig trotter jelly ($5) and shark jelly ($5) from Lao Liang Pig Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat at Berseh Food Centre (#02-37) are bouncy and refreshing, and I like how the texture and natural sweetness of the shark meat come through the jelly. The accompanying chilli sauce is too sweet for my liking, but the savoury jelly goes very well with the garlicky and tangy kway chap chilli sauce that is also available at the stall.
The kway chap ($4/pax, $0.50 for kway) is not bad too - the pork organs are cleaned well and braised to the right texture, the chilli sauce is on point and the soup has a slight sweet undertone which balances the savoury braise sauce. My only wish is for the tau pok to be a little softer.
Overall, I enjoyed this meal more than I expected and it’s nice to find something that stands out from run-of-the-mill hawker food!
