The Rundown
Singapore’s brunch stalwart Forty Hands makes its move on Malaysia this month, opening its doors in the new and still quiet The Sphere. We rushed down for early dibs on the famed cafe’s offshoot. It’s official — there’s a brand new spot in Bangsar South for good coffee and even better brunch.
The Vibe
Spot Forty Hands by the cute little yellow coffee neon sign against a sleek concrete wall. This sunlit cafe sports a steel container kitchen and large wooden tables that will comfortably fit four to eight. The industrial setting gives it an easy, casual feel and we’re loving the effort they put into the details — think chic lights and pretty plates. Sister cafe Common Man Coffee Roasters’ service team is currently doubling their shifts here, which means warm, prompt service. Mark this down for weekend brunch with a few friends or even an early team lunch near the office.
What’s Good
We’re glad most of the brunch dishes that made Forty Hands a hit in Singapore made it to this Malaysian menu, including the excellent Smashed Avo On Toast (RM22) and their wholesome toasties. If it is your first visit here, get the Banana Bacon French Toast (RM20). The dish of brioche, crispy bacon and sweet bananas drizzled in maple syrup won us over with its great execution and smart flavours.
We also tried and loved the Chili Scram (RM25). The chili-laden scramble jolts your taste buds with its heat (in a good way!), and also comes with feta, breadcrumbs and a side of aged balsamic mushrooms that are absolutely delicious. The only Asian-inflected dish on the menu is the Kong Bah Pao (steamed buns with braised pork in soya sauce, RM20), and while it was quite tasty, we felt the portion doesn’t justify its price (spend it on the French toast instead!). For those here with a bigger appetite, the 40 Hands Cubanos (RM28) with mojo pork, honey-smoked ham and parmesan sounds like a hearty, meaty sandwich that’s just right. We didn’t get to try this, but our server vouched for the dish to be a satisfying one — share your review and let us know. On coffee, their house blend roasted by Common Man Coffee Roasters is everything it should be: smooth, strong and tasty.
