Got to learn about the opening of a new stall at Buangkok Hawker Centre some time back named 凤祥经典小吃 Feng Xiang Classic Snacks — these folks are actually situated all the way at the back of Buangkok Hawker Centre around the area where one can find the various Muslim stalls such as that the outlet of Shawarma N Kebab and Sweets there. Despite being a fairly new stall, it does seem that the stall has already garnered a fair bit of attention especially from those whom seemingly frequent the hawker centre — the stall has seen queue lines form up especially during meal times for their fare; this might however be something got to do with how they have proclaimed that the chef is one that is formerly from the Crystal Jade group with a period of twenty (20) years worth of experience with the chain which is interesting to note. Feng Xiang Classic Snacks serves up mainland Chinese fare; think the likes of noodle dishes and dumplings being their main offerings that is being listed on their menu.
We actually came to Feng Xiang Classic Snacks for their Crispy Sheng Jian Bao but left the hawker centre being impressed with their Dumpling La Mian (Dry) instead. It is worth noting that the Dumpling La Mian at Feng Xiang Classic Snacks comes in two different variants; one being the soup version and one being the dry variant that we have had — both variants do come with four (4) pieces of dumplings per bowl of noodles. The dry variant of the Dumpling La Mian also comes as is without any additional bowl of soup on the side. Giving the Dumpling La Mian a bit of a toss, we found that the La Mian was coated with a good amount of the sauce that sits beneath everything else in the bowl — the sauce is one that is savoury with a slight tang from the addition of vinegar; this actually provide the bowl of noodles a rather refreshing hint of flavours since the slight sour-ness helps to whet the appetite, making it fairly easy to have the smooth and slurpy La Mian all on its own. One can also find traces of minced garlic all over the bowl which also helps to ante up the flavours of the dish. Meanwhile, the dumplings that came with the Dumpling La Mian were generously packed with meat and vegetable filling; one thing which impressed us was how incredibly soft and tender the meat filling was — all that whilst also not carrying any undesirable porky stench. We also felt that the dumpling wrappers were also incredibly smooth and silken as well.
We really wanted to like the Crispy Sheng Jian Bao but we did feel like we have had better from other establishments such as Shanghai Fried Xiao Long Bao at Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre when they were still located in the red zone of the food centre. The Sheng Jian Bao here does look a little plain with the lack of spring onions or sesame seeds to help add some visual appeal — whilst we did enjoy how these weren’t overly greasy and had a good contrast of textures where fluffy bun meets a crusty, beautifully browned underside, we felt that the pork filling wasn’t as well-seasoned even when compared to that of their dumplings that were served with their Dumpling La Mian. We also felt that the Crispy Sheng Jian Bao didn’t carry as much as broth as what we have had from some other establishments serving up the same in the past; resulted in the Crispy Sheng Jian Bao being a little lighter in flavour than we had expected it to be. With Feng Xiang Classic Snacks mentioning how they a chef formerly from the Crystal Jade group at its helm, it seems that Feng Xiang Classic Snacks does seem to do pretty well in their noodles and dumpling offerings; that being said, the Crispy Sheng Jian Bao isn’t their strongest offering. Feng Xiang Classic Snacks does seem to be an establishment wanting to serve up restaurant-quality fare at wallet-friendly prices in a hawker centre setting — their individually-sized food items are all priced at below $7; still relatively reasonable considering how things are priced these days. An option worth considering to dine at for those whom are in the area and don’t mind queueing a little for their food.
