Murphy's, an established brand from England that's been frying up fish and chips since 1967, has just opened its first Singapore outlet in Ang Mo Kio. The place here looks nothing like a greasy diner though. It's designed to be a stylish cafe complete with good coffee on the menu too.
The classic "Murphy's Fish and Chips" ($16 nett) uses arrowteeth fish fillet which has a nice flaky texture. At the soft opening today, I found the batter to be a little oily. But the soft spoken owner was very earnest in listening to feedback and said he'll work on improving it. I really like the authentic taste afforded by the malt vinegars specially imported from England (both original and onion flavours) which I splashed liberally over the fish and fat chips.
After my meal, I had the highly-recommended Mocha ($6). According to the barista, this full-bodied blend has a gentle acidity, the sweetness of milk chocolate and a lingering bittersweet finishing of cacao. My tastebuds operate on a simpler basis: they just found it marvelous.
