It's been around two years since my last visit to any Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe outlets and quite disheartened to see this dish end up becoming a limited time special from the usual menu offering it was in the past. Essentially a porridge, the grains are cooked soft enough but not reducing into a congee-like gloop, swimming in a pool of very light, simmered soy sauce that gives the dish savoury flavours. The eel adds that savouriness all in; just imagine that Unagi and its sauce perking up the light flavours and lifting the dish. Good for some warmth in the cold weather, but also a heartwarming dish for me because it's one dish I consistently had during dinner with my parents almost every weekend before I book in to Pulau Tekong.
