🔱Brown Sugar Kitchen: Chicken & Cornmeal Waffles🔱 Twas a great day to see friends yesterday. Sunny albeit cold weather, great photo op, amazing company and fabulous food!

I was watching tv a week ago that featured restaurants around the Bay Area that's worth trying out. I heard rave reviews about Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland which specializes on Breakfast-Brunch and Soul Food. Situated in West Oakland surrounded by lonely warehouses and empty buildings and constructions abound, this little restaurant doesn't find it hard to fill its tables, let alone make a fine long line beyond its entrance.
Coming in at 11am, a wise time for brunch, my friends and I chose to sit at the bar away from the doors that aggressively blow in the cold morning breeze.
We unanimously each chose the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Cornmeal Waffles which they are highly known for. I was salivating as the chefs in front of us made our food a mere few inches from our seatings.
When we finally had our orders which was $15 each, i was in FoodieHeaven. I took lotsa snapshots and finally after a few minutes, sunk my teeth on my Apple Cider sauce-drenched waffles which i liberally spread some brown sugar butter on. They were quite thin yet crispy and light. I think the best way to describe the waffle-sauce-butter combination is pure Zen.
Balance.
Perfection.

🔱Celebrity Cafe: Longsilog🔱
That surprising treat to know that a local cafe inside a hospital actually serves Filipino breakfast essentials brings a smile to my heart.
Celebrity Cafe is a nice in-hospital spot for visitors and employees to grab some grub. I was looking through the menu and was ready to pick some specials of the day but.. Longsilog caught my eye! Longsilog as i have previously posted before is Longganisa (Filipino sausage) with Sinangag (Garlic fried rice) and fried Egg ( umm... Fried egg!) its the breakfast of Filipino Champions and will always be a winner in my tummy!
The longganisa was sweet and salty and fried well with grill marks to flaunt. Chewy meaty and very Filipino! Garlic rice thats fluffy and hot, runny fried eggs over easy completes the pack! A side of tomato slices and some vinegar for longganisa-dipping goodness makes this dangerously delicious dish! This is better than your cereal or omelets!

🔱Homecooked Chicken Tocino🔱
Its been awhile since I've cooked something for myself. I haven't had the luxury of my own kitchen for over a year! But dropping by my old house where I used to live, the comfort of familiarity tides me over as I am surrounded by the kitchen that I have toiled over to cook and perfect easy dishes and experiment with tricky recipes.
I was starving. I looked around and saw some Basmati rice. Good. I can cook some rice. But what shall i eat it with? I raided the cupboard and saw some canned food, some vienna sausage, some spaghetti in a can, some pink salmon and some corned beef. The same old stuff.. I spied on the innards of our fridge and my eyes blew wide open when i saw the Chicken Tocino beckoning my name, saying "boil me, fry me, eat me Chez!" 👻 To which i happily obliged.

Grabbed a pan, filled it with some water, sliced the ready-to-cook chicken tocino (Tocino is bacon in Spanish, typically made from the pork belly) into cubes and let it boil! When the water has evaporated, the meat will fry in its own drippings. So i fried it till it was a little dark and its ready to munch! Sweet, tender and succulent, this truly cannot be beat!
