When I first visited Kota Kinabalu or colloquially known as KK, Tuaran Mee was said to be one of the few things as the must eat things in Sabah’s capital. It originated from a town in the outskirts of KK known as Tuaran (hence the name). It’s basically fried noodles served with chun kien (egg rolls), char siew and vegetables. Alcoholics can add local rice wine Lihing to their noodles.
I had the Tuaran Mee with char siew, roasted pork and fried pork (RM 16). The noodles look similar to wanton mee or e meen but the taste is very unique. Only when I read up more about this dish did I realise it’s because it’s made with only flour and egg yolks (no egg whites or alkaline water). In terms of texture, it was firm, eggy and springy.
The meats were nothing to shout about but they weren’t tough or dry. The char siew is of the old school variety. I loved the chilli sauce as it was spicy and gave a good kick to the noodles.
Regardless, this is certainly worth a try when coming to KK. Don’t think this is available in Singapore.
