Hu Tieu Bo Kho

$7.00 ยท 4 Reviews

Hu tieu bo kho, spicy beef stew noodle soup (4.5โญ๏ธ; $7.90), was the overall favourite! The broth was deep and complex - the perfect combination of fat, salt, acid, and a good injection of spicy heat! The fork tender braised beef, silky noodles, and other additions complemented the superstar broth.

Although one would usually think of chains like Mrs Pho or So Pho when you think of Vietnamese food, ๐™‡๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™‹๐™๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™‘๐™ž๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ข๐™š๐™จ๐™š ๐˜พ๐™ช๐™ž๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š is a hidden gem that the real Vietnamese in Singapore go to.

I feel that you can judge a good Vietnamese eatery based on the quality of their pho, so I ordered a bowl of ๐™Ž๐™ฅ๐™š๐™˜๐™ž๐™–๐™ก ๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™š๐™› ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ข๐™—๐™ค ๐™‹๐™๐™ค (PhแปŸ Dแบทc Biแป‡t, $8.90) to see for myself. The Special Beef Combo is like a zhnged-up version of your usual beef pho, with slices of beef, beef brisket and a raw egg that you can whisk in and cook in your piping hot soup.

Another item on Long Phungโ€™s menu was the ๐™Ž๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™˜๐™ฎ ๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™š๐™› ๐™‰๐™ค๐™ค๐™™๐™ก๐™š๐™จ (Hแปง Tiแบฟu Bรฒ Kho, $7.90), which caught my eye because itโ€™s something quite special that you donโ€™t usually find in other Vietnamese restaurants (at least, not in Singapore). The spicy beef stew is richly flavoured, and I could taste hints of spices like star anise. The beef was incredibly delicious, generous and fall-apart tender.

Of course, whatโ€™s a meal at a Vietnamese restaurant without Vietnamese Coffee? I ordered a hot and iced ๐™‘๐™ž๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ข๐™š๐™จ๐™š ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™›๐™›๐™š๐™š (Cร  Phรช Phin Sแปฏa Dรก/Dรณng, $4), both of which were rich and chocolatey, a perfect blend of aromatic Robusta coffee and creamy sweetened condensed milk. I especially love how they serve the hot coffee with the drip, just like in Vietnam.

I made a video on the ๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™‘๐™ž๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ข๐™š๐™จ๐™š ๐™๐™ค๐™ค๐™™ ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™Ž๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™–๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™ง๐™š, featuring Long Phung versus Mrs Pho. Otherwise also known as item number 7 on Long Phungโ€™s menu. We really wanted to try another Vietnamese hawker stall but as is our fate, it was closed when we went down. ๐Ÿ˜ช

That said, This bowl definitely still satisfied any Viet cravings I had! The brothy, beefy soup was intensely rich with a deep spicy flavour, but luckily it didnโ€™t go overboard with the flavours. Even the beef itself impressed, tearing apart with just our chopsticks. Good and something Iโ€™ll consider again if Iโ€™m in the area though I wouldnโ€™t make any special detours.
