Gudetama Lobster Onsen

One of the festive seasonal items offered as part of the ‘Salted egg Shiok Christmas’ menu, this crusty bread bowl does not contain the typical soup filling but rather, an interior of macaroni bathed in a creamy salted egg sauce that oozes out slightly (swipe to view). Topped with a Gudetama sunny side up, seafood lovers would be glad to know that this dish comes with an assortment of seafood ranging from crab claw meat, squid (omitted for mine) and prawns serve in a generous portion. Along with a side of fresh garden greens (broccoli, carrots, baby corn, cherry tomatoes), the salted egg sauce is thick, creamy which could have been more prominent in flavour, lacking a characteristic tinge of saltiness. Resembling more of a Mac&cheese instead of Mac&salted egg, which wasn’t a big issue since I am personally a fan of the former. A carbs-overloaded dish with macaroni within a pillowy bread bowl and topped with a crusty, crisp ‘cap’, the main highlight for me here has got to be the seafood elements- thefresh and juicy crab claw meat and prawns 💕.

Crispy bread skin, soft bread meat. The soup has a strong lobster taste! 😄

Decent lobster bisque in a large bread bowl! The broth was thick and creamy. Tried many other dishes here including their steak (tender but could be juicer), pork ribs (overpriced), eggs benny (yummy and adorable plating) as well as the seafood medley (not bad, liked the gigantic prawn). There's no such thing as "overdoing" the popular Sanrio character, Gudetama, at this cafe. Gush over the hanging waffles, the see-through egg tray table and even the wobbly eggs in the dishes — all plastered with the iconic lazy egg face. Located on the first floor of Suntec City (near the Convention Centre entrance), the character themed cafe is brought into Singapore by The Soup Spoon and Joe and Dough, so you know your food is in good hands. Start the meal by sharing the Gudetama Lobster Onsen ($16) — lusciously rich lobster bisque served with a poached egg in a crusty bread bowl, similar to the ones in The Soup Spoon. Then, tuck into delicious mains like the finger-licking good "Shiok" Pork Ribs ($38.50) that comes with smoky BBQ sauce (in a gudetama egg holder!), fries and cooked vegetables. End your meal on a sweet note with the Shoyu Ramen ($21.50). Don't be fooled by its appearance — the savoury looking treat is actually a dessert made with a chocolate mousse cake base, filled with smooth chestnut Mont Blanc and topped with earl grey jelly!
