A warm and toasty sandwich is a hard thing to beat on a brisk spring morning. Made from Bolo do Caco - a traditional bread from Madeira, Iberian prosciutto, goat's cheese, house sauce and red onion, the melange of savoury flavours contained within the crisp slices of bread are a belly warming balm against the cold.

Essentially what it says in the name – folds of ham and cheese in a crispy, hot-pressed croissant. One of my favourite breakfast foods.

The fruit toppings change every day which means more variety for us. Today it was a combination of kiwi, papaya and strawberry, ladled over a creamy and mild yoghurt base.

If you're ever in Sintra, Portugal, you need to visit Cafe Saudade for breakfast. Great food, amiable service and a chilled out vibe in a cosy, restored building meant we visited every morning for our daily cuppa.

Something to try are the traditional Portuguese sweets - the Queijada De Sintra (€1.3) is a traditional pastry made from fresh cheese, eggs, and cinammon nestled in a crispy crust. If you like egg tarts you'll love these. I enjoyed the Travesseiro (€1.5) more, which sees a sugar dusted, pillow-shaped(Travesseiro means pillow in Portuguese) puff pastry filled with fragrant and sweet almond cream. Both go great with a cup of Saudade Coffee (think Kopi C).
