Have been to Butterknife Folk at Funan twice! A really good experience both times because the service is always very welcoming and friendly. I usually need to try a few flavours before I decide (😅) and the staff is always very accommodating.
They have really unique flavours and the ice-cream is very dense and creamy! I’ve tried pistachio and another toffee flavour (I can’t recall the name 😭), and both were really good. The cones were crispy and fragrant too.
Costs around $5 a scoop, which is pretty standard for premium/boutique ice-creams. Will be back to try more flavours ☺️
Not the most flattering picture, but this is one of the better açaí bowls I’ve had! It’s not as sweet as the others, but you can request to have honey drizzled on top of it so no worries if you have a sweet tooth. 😋
The açaí has a creamy texture which I like, and the granola goes super well with it. ✨ I will be back!
This branch is at the basement of Raffles City (I think it used to be Jollibean there?), so it’s really convenient too.
Came here for a birthday meal because it was recommended by my mum ☺️ Out of all the different types of Chinese cuisine, Shanghainese cuisine is one of my favs!
First of all the decor of this place is super lovely, simple and classy. We could tell that the owners put a lot of thought into the kind of plates/bowls/cutlery used because they were all so intricately beautiful. 🤩 I’m totally a sucker for nice cutlery hahaha.
The 上海熏鱼 (Shanghai Smoked Fish) was delicious! Crispy on the outside and the fish meat is tender. The sauce is just the right kind of sweet. Really liked the 芥菜肉丝炒年糕 (Stir-Fried Rice Cakes with Vegetables and Pork) too. I’m usually not a huge fan of rice cakes but the ones here are goooood. Enjoyed the 开洋葱油炒面 (Stir-Fried Noodles with Scallion Oil too) and 糖醋排骨 (Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs) too!
The only thing that was a miss for me was the 生煎包, which is apparently not on the menu but can be done upon request? So we requested for a plate of it and it came but it was mala flavoured (which we weren’t aware of). I have nothing against mala but it didn’t go as well with the baos, would’ve preferred to try the original ones but oh well! Still a great meal overall 😌
This is quickly becoming my fav place to chill because it’s so minimalistic, natural and peaceful. Almost didn’t want to write a review for it because I love how quiet it is!
The furniture and decor are absolutely lovely and they have these gorgeous windows that look out to a park. 😻
The prices are actually pretty steep though - a small cup of kombucha costs around $7? But such prices are probably normal for health food like these. It’s my first time trying kombucha too and I quite like it! ☺️
The menu at this branch isn’t the full menu, but it’s comprehensive enough for me. Have tried the buns from their sister bakery (Slow Bakes) and they’re good too. Also tried the pumpkin pancakes the other time and it was really dense and delicious - in a very natural way.
All in all, not the most affordable place but a gem nonetheless because of its great views and vibes ✨
The whole self-service concept of this place reminded me of the local udon chains that I’ve been to in Japan! ☺️ An affordable and fuss-free kind of meal.
Had the 1-for-1 beef & onsen egg udon + tempura + drink set ($14) so it was very affordable indeed for a meal in town.
I’ve become a huge fan of udon after visiting Japan and this place didn’t let me down! The udon noodles are chewy and soaked up the right amount of soup. The soup was pretty refreshing as well! Sukiyaki beef was good, onsen egg was nothing out of the ordinary. Really liked the fact that I could add the spring onions and tempura bits myself too!
Tempura was pretty mediocre though, but I’m generally not much of a tempura fan anyway.
Visited this place at the recommendation of a friend (who’s a major foodie!)
Had the original butao king and we could customise how hard we wanted the noodles to be (I don’t like soft noodles so yay), how thick we wanted the soup to be, how spicy etc. I chose level 3 but it still isn’t very spicy so feel free to choose a higher level if you are very into spicy food 😛
I had the pork belly instead of char siew, because my foodie friend recommended that. And he was absolutely right! The pork belly was sooo good and melted right in my mouth 😻 It was so tender and did not feel oily at all. Never had pork belly with ramen before but this turned out to be so good! The broth is super rich too.
My third time at Tanuki Raw, and all three times I visited the branch at National Design Centre. I really like it because it’s nestled in a boutique accessories/design shop and feels artsy 😝
I’ve tried a couple of rice bowls - spicy miso char siew, garlic butter chicken, and now yuzu salmon miso. The rice bowls have been consistently good! The bowl looks small but the portion is actually pretty filling. And the Japanese rice, yumz.
My fav of the three rice bowls I’ve tried would be the garlic butter chicken - the chicken was crispy yet tender and the garlic butter was fragrant. Was slightly disappointed by the yuzu salmon miso though, because the yuzu taste wasn’t very obvious, though the sauce was tangy and quite refreshing. ☺️ And I’ve had better salmon elsewhere.
Have also tried their WHAM fries in the past, which is basically sweet potato fries + marshmallow + melted cheese + avocado. Sounds like it might be bad but it’s actually strangely good! Hahaha 😆 It’s one of those things that sounds terrible but turns out pretty delish. Worth a try I’d say.
My first time at this 风和日丽 place after seeing it so many times on Instagram 😝
It’s not a very big place so it felt quite cozy. The high chair and tables setting was quite nice to chill and hang out with friends. :)
The cocktails were quite pricey though. I got a glass of Little Pink Dot (marshmallow gin, raspberry liqueur, fresh berries, yuzu) for $19, but the taste was quite overwhelmingly sweet. Couldn’t really taste the yuzu, which was a pity because I really like yuzu. It looks really pretty though! 😂
They have rather unique local/southeast asian inspired cocktail flavours though (e.g. kaya lumpur, bubble tea etc) so I’m willing to visit again to give it another try!
Have visited the branch at One Raffles Link several times previously but this was my first time at Robertson Quay.
I prefer the environment here slightly more as this branch seems emptier (not sure if it’s due to COVID though) and more cozy, so it was a good place to hang out and chill with some friends.
The variety of beer here is great as usual, and very very affordable. They switch out their menu apparently so you get to try some new things every once in a while.
Tried some mains this time round, nothing much to shout about but it wasn’t bad either. Had the crabby chilli pasta and it was a lil too watery for my liking, but portion-wise was good 🙂
Got a side to share (taco chips + outrageously crazy nachos - $22), it was the most humongous bowl of nachos I’ve ever seen! Came with generous toppings of chicken and avocado and sour cream and chilli. Couldn’t even really finish it amongst 5 people 😂
Medium Unagi Donburi ($28.40++)
My mum and I love unagi so we’ve been wanting to try Man Man. Chose to visit the Clarke Quay (The Central) outlet as I heard that there’s not as much crowd there - and it’s true!
Tried the medium unagi donburi, which comes with unagi don, soup, appetizer (spinach), pickles. Very filling!
The unagi don was really delicious - I love that the unagi was slightly charred and crispy and very flavourful! The fish was chewy with just the right amount of fat. 😋 The Japanese rice was, as usual, exceptional hehe. I always try to avoid eating too much carbs but I can never resist Japanese rice.
The soup was actually really good too! Had not much expectations because it looks quite simple, but there were bits of yuzu peels in the soup which made the soup super refreshing! And I’m a huge fan of yuzu 🤩
The appetizer and pickles were nothing to shout about, but was a nice touch as it balances out the sweetness of the unagi.
A rather pricey meal, but nice to have it once in a while. It does remind me of the unagi dons I had in Japan :’)
Visited this place at the recommendation of a friend as we were craving for fish soup! Fish soup is always my number one comfort food 🙆🏻♀️
We got the Toman Fish Soup ($6.80) and rice/meesua/beehoon (+$0.50). The fish soup here is slightly different from the clearer ones we usually have, it’s much creamier and thicker and I really like it! Felt kinda like I was drinking steamboat soup haha, but a healthier/lighter version of it :)
They’re pretty generous with the fish slices, and the tofu in the soup goes super well with the flavourful soup! I actually finished the whole bowl of soup and
We also got some sides to share (chicken wings, prawn balls). They were quite mediocre though, probably ok to give it a miss.
Customised my own brown rice bowl for $11. ✨
I had the basil chicken, roasted broccoli with garlic, curry roasted cauliflower, soy eggs and nuts.
The portion was huge and I liked being able to customise because I chose everything I like! 🤩 It was a tad dry though, maybe because none of the ingredients I chose came with sauce. I tried my friend’s gong pao chicken and it was really good too!
