Pleasantly surprised by how good the food was here!

My friend suggested having my birthday dinner at Homeground Grill & Bar and the menu sounded good so why not? One of the star dishes for the night was the charcoal grilled whisky ribeye ($26++ for 200g). Staff and I would recommend going for medium rare because we won’t be friends if you have it at any other doneness. First thing you’ll notice is its aroma, the fragrance from the herbs and the smokiness from the charcoal would cause one to salivate. Secondly, the texture once you bite is extremely tender and juicy.

It comes with a salad and a red wine reduction as a complementing sauce but I thought it was fine by itself.

For $26++, it’s really value for money but it is also available on Burpple Beyond as 1-for-1 mains. A real steal if I may add.

Beautiful fluffy eggs!

Don’t you get irrational cravings for omurice? I do and so I braved the queue at Omurice Keisuke at Bugis+.

Keisuke’s concepts pride themselves for being known as value-for-money without compromising the quality of food. It is evident here in this recently opened establishment.

I had the omurice combo (S$12.90++) which comes with tomato rice wrapped with a blanket of fluffy egg, a Neapolitan or mentaiko spaghetti, a sauce of your choice (demi glace for me), and a salad/miso soup. Value! I can guarantee that you’d not just be satisfied but full as well after finishing this meal.

A little warning though, the establishment is tiny! Probably fewer than 20 persons at a time so prepare to queue for 30 mins during peak hours.

Do not miss on the cookie and ice cream at Blue Label Pizza & Wine!

My second visit after two weeks and I HAD to try the famous LUKE’s Chocolate Chip Cookie (S$4). It’s warm, it’s chewy and not overly sweet. My favourite kind of cookie.

And of course you gotta add their Blue Label ā€œHoodsieā€ Ice Cream Cup (S$7) to go with the cookie. Might I recommend their hazelnut coffee flavour? It’s wonderful.

Disclaimer: this is not its original presentation. Beautiful plating by my friend, Yilin!

Love the burger but that’s about it.

Five Guys came to town recently and the hype is still going strong.

Had the Cheeseburger and opted for the All The Way combination which is great for indecisive people. The combi comes with mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup and mustard. One may have additional toppings for free and they include relish, onions, jalapeƱo peppers, green peppers, A.1. steak sauce, BBQ sauce and hot sauce.

The burger is great. Juicy patties with a slight char. Ingredients were fresh. The burger is huge especially if you go heavy on the ingredients. However, the rest of the menu items live in its shadow. Also, they’re pretty costly with fries going for $7-11, milkshakes for $10 and refillable fountain sodas for $5. As a party of two, we spent $50 on a meal.

Would recommend a try, but don’t think it’s somewhere you’ll come often.

As close as you can get to Johor’s bak kut teh!

I braved the queue on a sweltering Sunday afternoon to finally try Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh! Yes, I know, why have BKT when it’s already blazing hot? I have no idea but I know it’s worth it.

I opted for the herbal claypot with premium pork ribs ($12.90/29.90, pictured/53.90). First thing that hit me was the soup. It’s wonderfully fragrant and one would definitely get a refill during his meal. Next, the pork was satisfactory, not as tender as one could find elsewhere but definitely tasty. Lastly and unfortunately, from an operations front, the service staff were a bit overwhelmed with the Sunday crowd so service was a bit slow.

I’d say to come try on an off-peak period to try the herbal soup. I’ll come back just for that.

Opulent oyster omelette!

Well, it tastes opulent! The oysters were large and most importantly, fresh! The omelette ($10.80 pictured) was fried to perfection, crisp not burnt and fluffy inside though a tad starchy. Pair it with their chilli sauce and you’ve got yourself a great snack.

Also a side note, many customers can be seen waiting around because they’re ordering multiple omelettes to take away! That’s how popular it is.

It’s hard to get grilled octopus right and @focpimpam achieves that.

One of my favourite tapas at FOC is the Octopus Galician-Style ā€˜A feira’ (S$28++) which is a popular dish in Spain. The octopus has good bite without being too chewy. The octopus is doused in oil, sprinkled with pimentón and rests atop a fluffy bed of crushed potatoes. It’s too easy to wipe this dish clean.
