Finally got to try Dumpling Darlings
It’s been on my wish list for sometime now and probably on many others’ as well considering I had to queue for half an hour to get a seat for two during lunch hour. They’re on Burpple Beyond which offers 1-for-1 set lunches and mains which makes this all the more worth trying.
The set lunches ($16++) offer a variation of egg noodle bowls and dumplings. I tried the miso mushroom noodles because I love braised mushrooms with my noodles as it adds a bit of sweet and salty. The chilled flavoured egg is also a nice complement.
Also included in the set is a serving of four dumplings. I opted for the unique fried pierogis which is a typical dumpling dish in Central Europe. Dumpling Darling’s rendition has a filling made of smoked bacon, smooth truffle potato, cheddar cheese, and caramelised onions. It’s served with a daring spicy sriracha sauce.
Lastly, the set includes a refreshing drink of pu-erh, tea or soda. Super value-for-money if you’re on Burpple Beyond*.
*The cashier informed us that they’ll appreciate it if customers could inform them if they’re using Burpple Beyond upon ordering to help them with the payment process!
Started 2019 on a good note with an impressive set meal by Fat Belly.
To the unacquainted, it may be hard to locate the restaurant but it actually shares the premises with its more visually prominent sister, Sugarhaus.
Fat Belly’s speciality is two different cuts of beef, the short rib and the flat iron. However, I wanted to start 2019 big so I opted for the “The Alternative Experience”, a 7-course set menu for $78++. Good news is that it’s on Burpple Beyond so imagine two set menus for $78++! Crazy value!
All the dishes were hits and my favourites include the savoury mind-bending foie gras creme brûlée with coral tuile, the beef rib char siew on roasted kale, the ground wagyu slider with Gouda cheese, wagyu streak with marble score of 7-8 tri-tip and a molten chocolate raspberry cake with cinnamon ice-cream.
Yeah, my favourites were essentially the whole set meal. That’s how much I enjoyed the meal. Will definitely be back especially with Burpple Beyond!

Delicious soup at a tiny shop.
Wanted something to feed my sick soul today but was surprised at how tasty the fish soup ($4) was at Isle Cafe at Tanglin Shopping Centre.
For $4, it’s value for money as it also includes rice or bee hoon. Granted the fish slices aren’t exactly huge, thick or bountiful but there are also other ingredients such as egg tofu and crab stick!
Still my favourite tendon haunt.
Tendon Kohaku in my opinion serves the best tendon. For $15++, one gets a large variety of tempura that are thick, juicy and crisp. The queue and Suntec is still long! Will try to satisfy cravings at their Chinatown Point outlet!

My first time trying Japanese dry ramen and I wish I had tried it sooner!
Upon mixing thoroughly, the noodles were glistening with oil, the golden egg yolk and Kajiken’s top secret sauce. The noodles itself was rich in flavour as I could taste a distinct blend of wheat that became accentuated with the addition of the sauce. It’s no wonder I slurped it all in an instant.
I had the mazesoba with all toppings that comes with an optional free upsize. The char siew was tender while the karaage was crisp. I’ve definitely fallen in love, for me, with a new Japanese dish.

My favourite tendon haunt launches its new winter tendon today!
Tendon is one of my all-time favourite comfort foods and I think no better place does it than Tendon Kohaku. The quality of the ingredients, the crisp but non-oily batter as well as its signature sweet sauce are all factors to its success.
This season, the restaurant is introducing its new winter dish, “Winter Ocean Treasures” that will be available for only three months. What’s innovative with this dish is the introduction of monkfish liver, a first for tendons. It’s especially popular during winter in Japan and taste and texture are commonly compared similarly to foie gras. Many usually consume it raw or cooked in a broth but rarely in tempura form!
The seasonal tendon that goes for $21++ also comes up with Alaskan snow crab leg, prawn, dory, squid, Japanese fish cake with mentaiko, king crab stick and topped with USA ikura. I’d really recommend anyone who loves tempura or tendons to try this delectable dish.

[LIMITED TIME ONLY TILL 2ND DEC] Handcrafted pastas that were made right in front of our eyes!
It’s a special occasion at Waterfall Ristorante Italiano of the @shangrilasg. The hotel flew Mamma Ria, the mother of restaurant manager, Andreano Carbotti, into Singapore from all the way in Italy!
I was fortunate enough to try all three pasta dishes that were exclusively made by Mamma Ria in true South Italian flair!
1. Homemade orecchiette pasta with braised stockyard Australian wagyu rayu. ($38++)
2. Homemade trottole pasta, grilled eggplant ricotta rolls and basil. ($32++)
3. Homemade cavatelli pasta with fresh seafood. ($35++)
Each of the three pasta dishes held a special place in my heart as they were amazing and had their own merits. The pasta integrated well with each of the sauces and had a bit of grit that reflected how raw and natural the pastas were crafted by hand. My favourite was definitely the wagyu ragu because the meat was so tender and hearty. Transported me back to my days in Italy.
