Newly Opened - June 2014 Edition

Hey there gastronomical adventurer! Always looking out for new restaurants and cafes to visit? Here are the hot new places! Do write in to community@burpple.com to suggest further.

Burpplers love the larger, relaxed sister space of Lola's Cafe at Pasir Panjang! Go for the popular honey paprika wings and a simple brunch.

In this new urban/edgy/bare brick Tras St spot, having Italian for dinner has gotten a lot more fun. Don't miss the Pulled Pork & Waffle fries ($15), perfectly fluffy homemade Gnocchi ($21), and the (omg wait for it) - Triple Cheese & Truffle Toasty at $15. Finish with a gorgeous Cannoli with whipped ricotta and lemon.

Expect playful Asian twists on French dishes such as wagyu beef skewers, and whole grilled squid. The bar is well stocked with wines from everywhere, and the ambience perfect for a casual night out.

Previously an old provision shop, Tian Kee is now a lovely cafe that amazingly retains nostalgia in the idyllic Dakota neighborhood. Complete with familiar toys, a kiddy ride outside that still works and no air con, this might just be the perfect spot to relax (until the crowd fills it up). Coffee is light, beans sourced by Dutch Colony, and the cakes are elegant. GO, before it's too late!

This beautiful new concept from Bali has taken over Keong Saik's iconic Tong Ah Kopitiam, and is thankfully serving great food in an inviting space. Tuck into a Three Buns burger on the whimsical second floor, and move upstairs to the third floor bar for a drink, or the rooftop garden if the weather permits.

A collab with the popular Sarnies, The Lokal features breakfast and lunch items like Triple Cheese & Mushroom toasties, Veal schnitzel burger, and excellent coffee. Great to have another quality cafe in the Duxton area!

Peloton, retailing triathlon gear, has been opened about 2 months. But their Coffee & Juice Bar has just started operations this weekend. Stopped by for a coffee today and they make it look like they've been serving up smooth coffees for years. Cyclists are more than welcome to stop by and even refill your water bottles! #CoffeeAndCravings

And All Things Delicious is Tolido's Espresso Nook's newest neighbour, which offers a wide variety for halal-certified bakes such as Gula-Melaka Scones, Brownies and Galettes. The baker insists on using unprocessed ingredients such as unsalted butter organic ingredients so as to make their bakes taste more "natural" and it shows; clean yet flavourful treats indeed. They also share their shop space with Fictive Fingers that does pretty decent handprinted textile designs, if anyone is interested.

The casual atmosphere at this New American gastropub certainly will put you at ease despite some unfamiliar dishes on their seasonally-changing menu. Rachel tells us more about this exceptional foie gras dish: "Inspired by a certain dish in US which he tasted then to be "the best thing I've had", this is what executive chef Benjamin declares to be the usurper of that title. I can see why - the strange combination of melt-in-the-mouth foie gras on crisp toasted brioche works surprisingly and superbly well with sweet elements of dark chocolate ganache and mashed bananas, crunchy granola crumbs and smokey bacon jam. I don't know if this is THE best thing I've ever had, but it certainly ranks among the top and for a non-foie gras fan like me, that's saying a lot."

Good news for those who have missed Chef Shen Tan's signature Nasi Lemak, you can savour it again at the newly opened Ujong. Of course, other dishes are worth a try too, but be prepared to pay quite a bit more than you're used to, with dishes averaging $20 a pop! Here's what Tastemaker Rachel says about the Hae Bee Hiam Mentaiko Capellini- "One of my favourite dishes here has to be this: thin coils of pasta emollient with garlic-and-prawn-stock butter, dotted with crispy lardons, and slicked with an unexpectedly creamy dried shrimp and mentaiko paste. Keep a glass of water on hand because this dish packs a hefty dose of heat."

First day of opening, and we couldn't wait to be the first customers! ;) Happy to have a neat little cafe so near home. Lovely decor, but very limited items on the menu for now, shall check back again soon.

True to Teppei style, Hanare offers two value-for-money buffet options: full buffet at $19.90 (one main dish + free flow of 20 side dish options) or bara set at $17.90 (chirashi don + free flow of 4 side dish options). While the full buffet had interestingly respectable dishes like whole garlic cloves cooked in Japanese spice, I much preferred the bara set. Topped with an incredibly generous portion of fresh chunky pieces of sashimi like salmon, tuna, scallop, surf clam, swordfish and roe, the chirashi was incredibly indulgent, save for the overpowering sesame dressing. If you're ordering this, you might probably want to request for the dressing on the side. Be sure to head down early; by 12:30pm, the 42-seater was packed with a dozen PMEBs waiting in line. Definitely worth the money, and best of all, you won't need to make a reservation two months in advance. #foodporn #foodreview #foodie #hanare #japanese #food #chirashi #sashimi

Crackling siobak, melt in your mouth charsiew are my faves. Roast duck is not too bad either. Highly recommend!

*NEWLY ADDED* Burppler Amalina highly recommends this fairly new Halal cafe! She says "This is banoffee pavlova with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It is awesome, the pavlova simply melts in your mouth. There are other desserts as well, such as cupcakes and tarts. All are worth trying, I promise! Highly recommended!"

Light, fluffy and airy waffles with a crispy exterior and a bread-like taste as they used yeast in their recipe for that fluffiness. Cheesecake gelato was slightly jelak to finish for one, but dab it on the waffle with each slice cut and it becomes a luxurious dessert to have.

If you are the one who can't miss out on hipster cafes, Craftsmen would be the place of your choice to chill especially with its industrial theme. If the orange cups look similar, that's because they are affiliated to Dutch Colony Coffee from Pasarbella. Not really a fan of their rather light-bodied coffee but it definitely has the potential of being an uprising cafe.

Beef short ribs, bovril, daikon, bonito. The beef was SOOOO good, a few mouthfuls were slick with rich, buttery, fatty bits that melted in the mouth like a dream. The daikon fries, however, were tasteless and did nothing for me.

Hungarian Mangalica Pork Collar Kebab grilled over Binchotan (White Japanese Charcoal). Served with Paprika Fries and Tsatziki. Yums!

Located in the private estates of Bowmount Gardens along Frankel Ave of Siglap is Coast and Company, the cafe wing of Coast Cycles. Bright and minimalist interior gives a clean and welcoming feel. Affiliated with Papa Pahelta, it offers various types of coffee from espresso-based to brewed coffee, as well as juices, teas and alcohol. The food menu consists of a limited selection of fusion dishes, all of which are designed with the help of local chef Willin Low of Wild Rocket. Looking for the aftermeal dessert? Choose from the muffins and croissants available or just head on to Flor Patisserie or Classic Cakes few units down.

You can go creative with this insanely tasty Peanut Butter Banana French Toast, drizzled with maple syrup and roasted walnuts x add on streaky bacons at the side.

Pillows of chocolate and caramel mouse on a chocolate biscuit-cake base, surrounded by buttery crumble and adorned with berries. A bigger portion would've been nice.

*NEW CAFE* A brand new cafe on the block, what's best is that they're Muslim-owned ;) Go check it out soon! See what Burppler Daniel has to say "Awesome food paired with travel adventures in this 2-day old café. I love the laid-back hippy vibe and the fact that there's no pressure to finish our food, unlike other hipster cafe where there's a constant line. Really hoping that this cafe won't be packed the next time I visit" #rouseondunlop #brunch
