@wanzai.sg tuck in Market Street Food Centre is a hidden gem serving up autentically classic Taiwanese dishes such as Braised Pork Rice, Beef Shank Noodles and Chicken Cutlet Fried Rice. And small bites like Fried Chicken Cutlet, Salted Crispy Chicken and Fried Mushroom.

what I tried

The fried Mushroom come in Shitake Mushroom and Enoki Mushroom in one hearty golden crunch. Coated in a light crunchy batter, it is crispy crunchy on the outside and irresistibly juicy, delectably flavourful and delightfully chewy inside.

what I tried

Salted Crispy Chicken
Each piece of the Salted Crispy Chicken are well seasoned and lightly battered. Fried till golden brown crisp on the outside and dusted with some chili powder. Neither overly salty nor spicy. The meat is tender, juicy and moist without requiring much effort to bite.

what I tried

Chicken Cutlet Fried Rice
The Chicken Cutlet look absolutely tantalising with its crispy skin fried to golden-brown perfection. The thick and juicy chicken cutlet is such a perfect pair to the crunchy batter. The crunchiness and tenderness are balanced so there isn’t too much of either and the seasoning so tasty that my mouth was bursting with flavours once I bite into it. Not forgetting the outstanding wok hei from the egg fried rice, this is a simple, yet killer combination

what I tried

Braised Pork Rice
The generous amount of richly flavour braised pork are in luscious chunks small bite sized that is all soft and incredibly melt-in-the-mouth tender with a great mix of fatty and lean meat. Doused generously in the sticky sweet sauce, which are amazing with the rice that soaked it all up. The steaming hot bed of rice beneath the braised pork is sufficiently soft and fluffy. There is also half a marinated molten-yolked egg in it.

I love how crisp the chicken cutlet is on the simple but tasty fried rice. The crunchy chilli was amazing, I wished I had taken more of it! Thanks to these young men I had an amazing lunch! Definitely recommend!

Came to know about this fairly new stall which had opened recently at Market Street Food Centre (i.e. the hawker centre within CapitaSpring) named 碗仔 Wan Zai. Taking up a unit that is the size of two standard-sized hawker stalls, Wan Zai’s signboard is pretty eye-catching, considering how the signboard is designed in a way that is seemingly retro and would easily capture one’s attention. Serving up Taiwanese cuisine, Wan Zai’s menu features a variety of pretty well-known Taiwanese dishes — think mains such as Braised Pork Rice, Beef Shank Noodle, and Chicken Cutlet Fried Rice, whilst those who are looking for items to share at the table can go for sides such as the Fried Chicken Cutlet, Salted Crispy Chicken and the Fried Mushroom. Attracting a rather decent queue for lunch, the queue at Wan Zai may seem to be shorter than that of the more popular stalls that are situated within Market Street Food Centre, though there is still sufficient crowd for the queue to exceed the length of the stall with some waiting time (though rather fast moving) required for the orders to be cleared.

Skimming through the menu at Wan Zai, it is without a doubt that the item we would be going for is the Braised Pork Rice Set. While the Braised Pork Rice Set is also available in ala-carte, the set is a $2 top-up to the ala-carte Braised Pork Rice, and sees the addition of a small serving of the Salted Crispy Chicken that is to be served on the side. Digging into the Braised Pork Rice, we actually quite liked what went on in the bowl here; the bed of rice beneath the braised pork being pearl rice that is sufficiently moist and sticky, while the braised pork over the top was well-executed — think a savoury braised sauce that is well-balanced without being overly salty nor heavy, all coming with small bite-sized chunks of diced up minced pork that is all soft, tender and melt-in-the-mouth which is a great mix of fatty and lean meat that was incredibly easy to eat. Coming with bits of spring onions over the top; the spring onions provide a soft crunch on its own, while the Braised Pork Rice also comes with half an egg that features somewhat of a molten yolk; the accompanying bokchoy giving a good crunch for a good break between the carbs and the savoury braised meat. The Salted Crispy Chicken that came on the side was well-fried; bite-sized chunks of meat that is sufficiently tender and moist without requiring much effort to bite. It also came with a golden brown batter; crisp on the outside whilst being seasoned with paprika and salt for that saltish and spicy note that makes it a very tempting side to snack on continuously — something which we seemingly enjoyed.

There seems to be an ongoing trend for Taiwanese cuisine of the late — with establishments such as Tai One Wei, Wen Li Taiwanese Food and DuDu Rice & NiuNiu Tea opening up in various corners of Singapore, it does seem that there would be more of such establishments that would be opening in due course. Having tried various bowls of Taiwanese-style Braised Pork Rice from different establishments and stalls for a while, we do feel that the Braised Pork Rice from Wan Zai is likely to be one of better ones that we have had thus far — this probably would include the one which we have had at Wen Li Taiwanese Food as well as one of our long time favourites, Eat Three Bowls, which has outlets at Pasir Panjang and Crawford Lane. We were actually found that the Braised Pork Rice Set is reasonably priced; being listed at $6.50, the item was of a good quality as well — one of the more affordable options within the Central Business District even that is priced competitively against other hawkers within the same food centre. A hidden gem that is waiting to be uncovered, we do expect a bit of a queue to form up here once hungry office workers start to discover this spot; definitely somewhere which we would dine at again if we are ready to deal with that intense lunch crowd that are here on the weekdays!
