Sembawang hasn’t been a spot that is especially affiliated with hipster cafes — it does come as a surprise that The Nursery (yes, the local house plant curator at King George’s Avenue at Jalan Besar) has recently opened a new outlet at ARK @ Gambas, and has also started operations with a cafe and bar that is situated next to their retail store. Taking up half of the left side of the unit that they are taking within the light industrial building complex which they are situated in, The Nursery Cafe & Bar is well-decorated — think an environment that is filled with patio furniture that quite exudes the same vibes of a black-and-white house would; the usual of black marble-esque counter tops and wooden furnishing and fittings compliment that look really nicely, while plants adorn the whole space for that vibe that is close to nature and on point with its primary business as a house plant curator and retailer of related accessories and wares. Visiting The Nursery Cafe & Bar during their very initial phase of operations, The Nursery Cafe & Bar was serving up a soft launch menu when we made our trip there; the menu is split into several sections including sections that are dedicated to Waffle, Pizza, Bar Bites, Pastries and Desserts — there is also a Granola Bowl listed in the “Organic” section of the soft launch menu as well. Non-alcoholic beverages available at The Nursery Cafe & Bar includes specialty coffee, tea, canned drinks, as well as concoctions of soda such as the Lemon Bitter and Wild Berries Fizz; they do also serve up quite an extensive list of alcoholic beverages, which include a list of cocktails, as well as different wines such as Whites, Reds, and bubbles such as Prosecco, Rose and Moscato.

Visiting The Nursery Cafe & Bar for lunch, we found the soft launch menu a little limited considering what they have to offer — we found ourselves going for the Classic Bacon & Egg Waffle after much deliberation on considering what item on the menu would we like to go for. A really basic affair here, the Classic Bacon & Egg Waffle was simply just what it was supposed to be; a rectangular waffle that has been topped with a sunny side-up, as well as two strips of bacon with syrup served on the side. No doubt a little bit on the basic side, but we were also glad that were able to get the basics right — the waffle being crisp on the exterior and fluffy within; comes with a slight hint of sweetness, while the bacon was also crisp and provided that hint of savouriness typical of cured meat that also went well with the sweet syrup. The sunny side-up was also was also done well; the yolk being still runny, while the egg itself did not reek of any undesirable stench of overused oil. The only qualm for us here would be how they could have used syrup of a better quality — the syrup here felt a little too liquid which doesn’t quite cling on anything and a tad too sweet for our liking; one that was a little commercial and felt a bit cheaply-made. Otherwise, a dish which we found to be fairly decent.

Having also tried the Crispy Prawn Rolls as well as the Latte, we found one thing about The Nursery Cafe & Bar was how the establishment felt really mismatched in the way that the place was decorated with the type of food that they serve up. Whilst the space is beautifully decorated and is especially relaxing with vibes almost similar to that of a black-and-white house with lots of greenery, the food was exceptionally basic — the dishes served here does feel like something one could easily prepare at home; stuff that seemed to have been prepared from commercial products and just seemed to be lacking that vibe of a specialty coffee joint that it seemingly portrays itself to be on first look. Perhaps it was their direction for The Nursery Cafe & Bar to be more of a convenient spot for simple food for their shoppers, though we would have preferred a concept that was more artisanal and carries more thought to match up against what is offered by other specialty coffee joints these days. To their credit however, we were thankful that the overall experience was pleasant — apart from the slightly long waiting time for food, their staff were actually pretty alert and do make their patrons feel welcomed, while the dishes despite being basic, does seem to be decently executed in general without much to comment negatively. With its current offerings in the soft launch menu though, it is unlikely that we would return to The Nursery Cafe & Bar again despite its proximity to us — there is so much potential in this space but we found it a little bit of a pity that they somehow seem to lost the plot; hopefully they would take the chance to review through what other specialty coffee joints are offering before their official launch soon.
