[CLOSED] The Dispensary

10 Wishlisted
* This place has closed :( Please try somewhere else. * The Dispensary has taken over this prime Tiong Bahru spot, and transformed the former Chinese Medical Hall into a cafe, offering whole and sliced cakes, cupcakes, macaroons and a few simple savory bites. The space is quite special, you'll need to see it for yourself. If you're in luck, the Black Velvet Strawberry cake will be available, don't think twice. Just order it. FYI, get your coffee fix before coming here.

I often patron The Dispensary during weekdays after lunch time. Usually it is so empty I have the whole place for my own hahahaha. I love their cupcakes especially sea salt caramel however they were quite tiny for $3.20 each... Ultimate favourite had got to be the red velvet sliced cake at $7+ if I remembered correctly.

Tried the smoked salmon scrambled eggs and regular eggs Benedict ($14-$16)! Pretty average and simple fare but interesting and quaint decor! Apart from the cafe, there is also a little boutique on the second floor.

Fudgy chocolate cake that wasn't too rich. The slightly cooked banana was fragrant and not overpowering, and the peanut butter layer was a little salted which made this cake the perfect mixture of sweet salty savoury. The blueberry cheesecake was decent at best though.

The Black Forest cake at the front had a thick layer of cream cheese on top, suitable for my palate but too much for my friend. The cake had a strong eggy taste, but apart from that this cake would be perfect. The magnum ice cream cake at the background gave us a good chill in this hot weather, and was not too chocolatey or sweet. It melting instead of us should be a good deal!

Hopping over next door for desserts, red velvet cakes is moist cake and smooth cream cheese

This would be easily one of my favourites when it comes to nostalgic-themed cafes. What used to be located within the grounds of The Dispensary was a Chinese Medicine Hall, and The Dispensary beautifully combines that theme with the cafe by incorporating the cafe into the shop space rather than vice versa (which a lot of cafes does these days). A lot of detail can be seen that shows the amount of effort in preserving the shop's past; the old Chinese medicine cabinets, the mirror with Chinese characters and the outdoor facade all pays tribute to its past. While The Dispensary does serves all-day brunches and sandwiches, go for their cakes; especially the sliced ones since it is what they are known for. Feeling stuffed? Takeaway some of the cupcakes instead, which gives you a rough gauge on what to expect for their sliced cakes as well.
