The Ang Ku Kueh Hut is not a spot that is particularly new to the F&B scene at this current juncture; the folks at The Ang Ku Kueh Hut had apparently started business sometime back in the early 2000s — they had only made their move into the shophouse unit which they are currently occupying at Kim Keat Road in the past couple of years. Being mostly a location which is also doubles up as a main kitchen for the production of their Ang Ku Kueh, it is pretty surprising to have found out that the folks at The Ang Ku Kueh Hut have included a small dine-in seating space that comprises of high tables and chairs as well as one table with couch seating that allows patrons to enjoy their Ang Ku Kuehs on the spot. Much like the other Ang Ku Kueh specialty stores that are around, The Ang Ku Kueh Hut does serve up Ang Ku Kueh in quite a wide variety of flavours — think more conventional flavours like the Green Bean and Peanut variants, to more modern crowd favourites like the Yam and also adventurous flavours like the Pistachio as well. Unlike most other Ang Ku Kueh establishments though, the Ang Ku Kueh here are sold in boxes of five (available in single flavour or assorted flavours) rather than by per piece. Apart from Ang Ku Kueh, The Ang Ku Kueh Hut also serves up their own innovative take of waffle-lised form of an Ang Ku Kueh named the Kuehffle; they also do serve up Rainbow Agar Agar as well for those looking for something apart from the Ang Ku Kueh. Meanwhile, the beverages available at The Ang Ku Kueh Hut mainly revolves around a variety of tea from Gyphon Tea Company and Roji Tea; those who are looking for other beverages will also be able to find a limited variety of soft drinks available here.

The Ang Ku Kueh Hut was running a one-for-one promotion with their Merry Bowl in the Kuehffle menu; considering the deal that we were having going with the Merry Bowl, it is needless to say that we settled for just that. For those whom are unaware, the Kuehffle at The Ang Ku Kueh Hut refers to Ang Ku Kueh that is to be served flattened and griddled in the waffle grill; a rather inventive way of serving up Ang Ku Kueh that seems to be rather unique to The Ang Ku Kueh Hut. Where the Merry Bowl is of concern, the Merry Bowl comprises of the patron’s choice of Kuehffle (i.e. the flavour of the Ang Ku Kueh that one chooses to be served in the form of a Kuehffle), one scoop of ice-cream of the patron’s choice and one sauce of the patron’s choice. Considering the number of different ice-cream flavours and the various flavours of Ang Ku Kueh which they have to offer, the Merry Bowl is highly-customisable — we sought for some opinions from the staff behind the counter whom recommended us to pair up the Taro Kuehffle with Coconut ice-cream and Gula Melaka sauce. On first look, the Kuehffle does come with a ice-cream stick stuck on one of the ends; we do also note that the sauce is only drizzled on top of the scoop of ice-cream; this meant that there really isn’t a need to match the choice of sauce to the Kuehffle as much as one would need to do so with the choice of ice-cream that they opt for. The Taro Kuehffle was decent on its own — the Yam Ang Ku Kueh that serves as a base here came with a yam filling that is almost akin to that of yam paste; a very earthy filling that isn’t overly sweet, all that with a paste-like texture. The exterior of the Ang Ku Kueh had become crisp from the grilling, yet still a bit chewy without sticky to the teeth. While there was nothing much to about the coconut ice-cream and Gula Melaka sauce individually, they do match up well as a classic combination that goes well with the Yam Kuehffle altogether.

Since it was a one-for-one deal that we had went with for the Merry Bowl, we had also tried a more adventurous combination where we opted for a Pistachio Kuehffle with MSW Durian Ice-Cream and Chocolate Sauce for the other Merry Bowl that we were entitled to. It is evident from this Merry Bowl on how inventive the folks at The Ang Ku Kueh Hut can be — the Pistachio Ang Ku Kueh that was the basic offering behind the Pistachio Kuehffle is one that is meant to appeal to the younger generation and those whom have more adventurous tastebuds. The Pistachio Ang Ku Kueh sees a more crumbly filling rather than a paste-like filling here — this replicates that of Peanut Ang Ku Kueh where the Ang Ku Kueh comes filled with crushed pistachios within. We can see how this would have went well if had as an Ang Ku Kueh, though the Kuehffle rendition of it does see the entire Kuehffle being unable to hold up well on the ice-cream stick and disintegrated rather quickly from the lack of moisture within; that being said, the combination of the Pistachio Kuehffle along with MSW Durian Ice-Cream and Chocolate Sauce also proved to be a rather interesting combination of flavours that went somewhat well together for those with an adventurous tastebuds to go for. Since The Ang Ku Kueh Hut only serves up their Ang Ku Kueh in boxes of five pieces each, the prices for their Ang Ku Kueh starts from $6.50 to $11 — this is pretty dependent on which flavour of the Ang Ku Kueh one is to go for. The Kuehffle on the other hand is available per piece; the Kuehffle is priced between $1.50 to $3.50, while the Merry Bowl comes at a price of $7. Overall, we would like to think that The Ang Ku Kueh Hut does serve up some inventive but well-made renditions of Ang Ku Kueh that is worth making the trip especially for those looking into having a slice of heritage; a spot to add to the list for Ang Ku Kueh lovers out there!

Little bits of durian inside, but I prefer real durians

Their pistachio AKK was already sold out when I reached around 1.30PM on a Saturday. Decided to go for their Box of 5 - Assorted instead at SGD6, and the flavours include Green Bean, Red Bean, Peanut & Yam!

It’s not bad but I actually preferred the ones from Ji Xiang AKK which is cheaper too. SGD1 a piece for the traditional flavours…
