Going, going and (nearly) gone. Legendary pastry shop @tanhocksengsg is going to close down at the end of this month, this time (really) for good.

And I am definitely going to miss the crispy and flaky crust of their beh teh sau which is filled with a warm, savoury salty sesame paste.

I travelled all the way down and there was none of their signatures left. This is a classic snack. It's easy to like but not different from other shops.

I travelled all the way down and there was none of their signatures left. This is a very Hokkien snack. Nothing really.

Fresh from the oven old school bakes. The beh teh soh comes with crispy and golden brown crust. The light and flaky layers peeled off easily and melt-in-the-mouth. The fillings are not overly sweet with a good balance of maltose and sesame 》$5 (5 Pcs)

A hidden gem and old school shop that sells traditional pastries. Sadly, this 90 year old bakery has decided to pull its shutters down at the end of October. There may be some hope for someone else to take over the business but things are still not firmed up yet.

I went over to order some tau sar piah which was fragrant and tasty. For the same price, the size here is smaller compared to those at loong fatt but I won't mind getting these when I'm around the vicinity to savour some old school traditional bakes and save myself from the crowd. The almond cookies didn't turn out as well as expected. I couldn't smell/taste much of the almonds and it just feels like a normal cookie to me.

Almond Cookie 》$4
Tau Sar Piah 》$0.80 each

Our parents have been patronising Tan Hock Seng since we were kids and we're really sad to see it closing down😣. We never fail to get their Beh Teh Saw and Tau Sar Pia, which are really our family's favourites👨‍👩‍👧‍👧. This time round, we only managed to get our hands on their Beh Teh Saw, which is probably our last time too. We love that the pastry is flaky and that the filling is not too sticky and sweet, which makes a great afternoon tea🍵! Sad to know that we won't be able to enjoy this in the future, but it has also taught us to all the more appreciate traditional bakeries that are still around😊.
