Pan-seared salmon a delicious and well-rounded flavor. The exterior should be nicely caramelized, while the interior remains tender and moist. The natural richness of the salmon should shine through, complemented by any seasonings or marinades used
topped off with home made cream base sauce to further enhance the flavors.
Price Tagged at $25 totally worth it!

This savoury carrot cake has no carrot, at least not of the orange variety. Instead, the core ingredients of the cake are rice flour and white radish, which some call white carrot. The mixture is steamed, then cut into cubes and fried with garlic, prawns, eggs and preserved radish with their special chilli

A relatively new cafe, SPACE coffee boasts a large simple cafe space. Once you enter the cafe, you will be greeted by a strong coffee aroma, which is really inviting.

We had an Iced latte ($7) and an Iced Mocha ($8). The Iced Latte was strong and aromatic, without being too milky; just the way I like it. The Iced Mocha was also very chocolatey, but can be quite sweet.

If you are around the area this is one place to come to hide away from the shine or the rain!

Space Coffee
587 Geylang Rd, #01-01, Singapore 389526

Whilst Geylang has since a little bit of action from the local cafe scene of the late with the opening of establishments such as that of Geylang Drip City in recent years, one thing about Geylang that still hasn’t changed after all these years is how the neighbourhood still isn’t known to be quite an enclave for specialty coffee. So it has come to much surprise when SPACE came into the picture; located at 587 Geylang Road, SPACE is situated in the heart of Geylang opposite Lorong 30 Geylang. This would be opposed to Geylang Drip City’s location, which is closer to Kallang MRT Station instead. Still hidden behind a blue construction canvas that drapes from the shophouse’s facade, SPACE occupies quite a large shop space; in fact, possibly having taken up the space of two shophouses here. The interior can be said as minimalist with a slightly European approach; the space mainly features white walls with concrete floors and a concrete-esque counter — all that complimented with wooden furnishings and fittings that complete the look. Visiting SPACE during its soft launch phase, SPACE is already serving up a hot food menu that comprises of salads, breakfast platter and sourdough toasts; just to name a few, while they also do offer a small variety of bakes that are on display near the counter. For their specialty coffee offerings, SPACE brews their coffee using beans using the Anna blend which they have sourced from TAD Coffee Company — a blend that features Ethiopian, Colombian and Ugandan beans, while they also do offer other non-coffee beverages such as Chocolate, Matcha and a Lemon Plum Sours.

Having skimmed through the menu whilst seated down in the cafe, we found ourselves gravitating towards the Space C.C that was listed in the food section of the soft launch menu. The item bore a description that indicates elements such as egg, prawn, carrot cake, house-made sambal, house-made sauce, Cai-Po (i.e. salted preserved radish) and coriander being included in the dish. If the description of the item on the menu does ring a bell, then perhaps one may have guessed it right — the Space C.C is essentially their rendition of the local white carrot cake; C.C being the acronym of Carrot Cake here. Priced at $15, we would reckon that there would be many who would draw some comparisons between the Space C.C against the white carrot cake that one would be able to find in coffeeshops or at hawker centres. To be fair, it probably would not be quite fair to expect SPACE to serve up a stellar rendition of the carrot cake as much o the degree of what one would expect from the likes of the Michelin Bib Gourmand Chey Sua Carrot Cake.

That being said, the Space C.C is a rendition of the carrot cake that does surprisingly better than some hawker / coffeeshop variants out there — the carrot cake cubes are sliced in bigger chunks here; they were soft to bite without being too dense or springy, whilst laced in sufficient egg that brings everything such as the savoury and crunchy Cai-Po and the carrot cake cubes together. We definitely were not expecting much of a wok hei with this one, but the slightly smoky and savoury house-made sambal made its magic here by providing the Space C.C with a punchy contrast of flavours and a slight tinge of spiciness that would tickle the tastebuds for those whom are tolerable to moderate levels of spiciness. The addition of prawns is that element that provides the Space C.C its “boujee” touch that sets it apart from the usual coffeeshop / hawker centre variant as one that is served in the cafe; the prawns were pretty huge, whilst carrying a natural sweetness that further adds on to the complexity of flavours in the Space C.C. Whilst some would have their opinion on coriander, the addition of coriander cuts through the density of the carrot cake cubes and the savoury notes from the Cai-Po and house-made sambal — provides a refreshing zing that attempts to reset the tastebuds as well.

Being a specialty cafe situated in Geylang, it seems that SPACE does have some considerations in mind whilst designing the food to be served in its soft launch menu. We noticed how the selection of food in the menu here are pretty much served without meat — there are however some dishes which sees cheese being served, such as that of the Vege Brekkie that features Halloumi Cheese, the B.F.C Sald that features Feta, and the Vege-Mite that features mozzarella and cheddar; perhaps a move considering how the area is also filled with plenty of religious societies around its vicinity. There also seems to be an attempt in serving up a slice of nostalgia to appeal with the demographics of the population here — items like the Space C.C and the Coconut Bun that we had also tried perhaps to bring a bit of familiarity to the older folks that might patronise them. Then there is also the attempt of injecting a bit of their own take into something of the old — the Lemon Plum Sours being an example of that where they had taken carbonised the old-school beverage of Sour Plum with Lemon to give a bit of modern take. Prices of the food at SPACE are pretty typical of the same that are served at other specialty cafes — the hot food being priced from $12 to $24, while the bakes range from $4 to $5.50. That being said, we are looking forward to what the folks of SPACE would be coming up with in their finalised menu as they move towards the stage of official opening — it does seem that they are pretty meticulous in their curation of food items and have taken quite a bit of attention to detail for how they are aligning towards the neighbourhood that they are situated in; one can only look forward to what else that they are going to bring to the table as they launch officially soon!
