The heritage braised duck recipe by father Ong Soon Hwa at this stall dates back to 1984, and has since been passed down to son Ong Jun Ru, who was classically trained as a chef.

Their house braising gravy is made with 18 ingredients, including soy sauce, cinnamon, tangerine zest, and other herbs; the duck is then braised for about 4 - 5 hours till it turns tender and succulent, infused with meaty herbal sweet savoury salty earthy flavour.

Their yam rice is delicious, with chunks of soft yam / taro buried within the well seasoned rice, enticing with earthy grainy savoury sweet flavour.

Soft peanuts and bouncy egg, braised in that same excellent gravy, accompany.

Fresh slices of crunchy cucumber and crisp spring onion lend vegetal sweet notes and a contrast to texture. Their dipping sauce of white vinegar and chili has a good tangy sour spicy kick.

A taste of childhood. Been eating there when they were at longhouse, first time having them again at balestier.

EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS IT WAS. Due to nostalgia I really love this(it was by far the best braised duck rice my younger self have had) but I will try to be objective.

Their grains are particularly delicious. Each has a life of its own, most places have grains that stick together but this doesn't at all. Superb with the sauce, good enough to eat on its own

Their chili is still smashing too. A sweet sour slightly viscuous clear garlic sauce, as well as a peanutty thicker sauce that brings a bit of heat. Mix the two for maximum pleasure.

Have to say their duck meat is not the most tender but good enough. Also there's mad skill in deboning the duck leg, it's super clean.

Duck soup is plain but nice, there's depth. Imagine salted veg duck soup without the salted veg lol

Hands down the best duck noodles I’ve tried πŸ™ŒπŸΌ I love both their duck rice ($4) and duck noodles ($4)! Portion size for rice is bigger than the noodles! The duck meat is tender and the sauce is so good - make sure to opt for chilli with your noodles as well πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Would highly highly recommend trying, definitely a place worth travelling to! 😍

PS: do try to avoid the lunch crowd (12 pm ish) and do take note that they also sell out by about 6pm daily!

Messy, but extremely satisfying. The standard duck rice ($4) comes with rather substantial portion of duck meat and a braised egg and I must say: the quality is excellent. All ingredients including the rice has a strong braised flavour. One of their specialty is their chilli, which lifts the dish to a whole new dimension.

They did not neglect the soup as well, as the herbal notes truly made the experience refreshing as well.

Dog goes woof, cow goes moo, duck goes...straight into my stomach. Soon Kee, which was at Longhouse for the better part of a decade before bouncing around and finally settling in Balestier, has been a family favourite for almost as long.

Their braising sauce is T H I C C and ultra unctuous and umami, and it goes well on the tender, delicious duck, the slightly dry but unquestionably delicious rice, the porridge, the noodles...yeah, it goes well on just about everything.

While my annoyance at the duck getting sliced up too thinly still goes unaddressed, the duck itself, despite having its texture somewhat marred, is smashingly savoury from being slowly boiled in that brilliant braising sauce. That sumptuous, sapid sauce just serves to heighten the gluttonous gratification of the duck.

Also, their fried chili is the best in Singapore. Slightly sweet, superbly savoury & rounded off with a feisty fire from the chili, it’s absolutely addictive and impossible to resist.

Is Soon Kee the best braised duck rice in Singapore? Yes, quite possibly so.

A very nice braised duck rice. The gravy is flavorful and they give a generous ammount of cilantro and cucumber to cut the heavy meat. The meat is also flavorful but could have been more tender. The chilli is very good, spicy and piquant. Overall, recommend.
