Housed in a quieter part of Jalan Besar just a stone's throw away from one of our fave cafรฉs @tolidosnook , the clean minimalist decor is a refreshing touch to the nostalgic charm of an old neighbourhood. ๐ธ๐ฌ
Although it's missing the cosy Taiwanese charm of its old location IMHO, the food here definitely goes straight to the heart!

ๅๆฆๆ ($10.00) - Beautifully layered with Feuilletine, Chocolate sponge and 70% Dark Chocolate Mousse, my fave part of this cake was definitely the Caramel Praline core, which stole the show with its fragrant nutty flavour but yet complemented the whole cake wonderfully. Definitely returning for this one. ๐

๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ฆ๐จ๐ ๐ ๅฐ็ๅท ($7.00) - Was pretty excited to try this cake made with Japanese sweet potato ๐ฏ๐ต and French @Isigny Cream ๐ซ๐ท since I'm still revelling in my new obsession of Taiwanese Sweet Potato Balls, but unfortunately the flavours were pretty muted and wasn't particularly mind-blowing. Would pick HAZEL over this for sure.

๐ฐโ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ป๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ($6.00) - Originally sold as a shot of ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, the cheerful barista asked if I would like to try it as a Latte instead, and I have absolutely no regrets! None of that fake syrupy saccharine sweetness, but a satisfying nutty flavour enhanced by the creamy milk. Absolutely delightful, and I can safely say, we've found our favourite Hazelnut Coffee in Singapore!!! ๐ฅณ๐๐โค๏ธโค๏ธ

With Simple Cafe moving closer to the east where I stay, we had to give it a try.
We ordered 2 coffees and 2 different bakes. The Spring Onion Amann ($7) is a very interesting take of the usual kouign amann, as it is a savoury pastry. The outer crust is beautifully crispy, and you get a good bold flavour from the spring onion slices within. The egg on top is a beautiful addition, as it adds another dimension to the pastry.
The Vanilla Donut ($4.5) was really soft and fluffy and nicely coated with sugar to give it an additional satisfying crunch. The vanilla custard is not too sweet and has a good vanilla taste!
Now to their coffee. Their mocha ($6.50) is okay though I feel like their chocolate syrup is a little lumpy.
We swapped out the hazelnut espresso you see in the picture for hazelnut latte ($7) that is not in the menu, and wow this is probably the best hazelnut latte I've had. The syrup they put in definitely isn't artificial and has very fragrant nutty flavour. Pity it came in a small cup!
With a larger space and at a more centralised location, Simple Cafe is back! And so I had to order their best-selling items that I missed previously like their Satsuma and Spring Onion Amann.
Filled with a cottony Japanese sweet potato puree, the Satsuma ($7) was none too sweet and pretty unique. The sweet potato flavour was light yet distinct and very complementary to the light fresh cream. The sponge of the swiss roll could be a little fluffier in my opinion but the different textures at play were great.
I found my new favourite pastry from the cafe and it is their Spring Onion Amann ($7). An ingenious creation, the flaky laminated dough was so good. Served toasted, there was a nice crisp to the aromatic spring onion studded layers. The homemade sauce was uber savoury, umami even. Whatโs more, the egg blanket on top was the icing on the cake as it was both soft and fragrant.
